Rhodes Baseball Goes 3-0 on Home Opening Weekend

After splitting the opening series 1-1 against Centenary, the Lynx returned to Stauffer field for a three-game home stand consisting of a two-game series against Greenville University and a single competition against the Vikings of Augustana College.

Rhodes would open the weekend in game 1 of 2 between the Lynx and the Panthers of Greenville University. The Lynx RBI leader Dante Messina wasted no time as he stroked a first-inning single to drive in Ben Burkhart, giving the Lynx the early lead. Both offenses would remain silent until the 5th inning when Greenville blasted a 3-run homer to take a 2-run lead over the Lynx. This seemed to ignite a fire in the Rhodes lineup as they were quick to respond in the bottom half of the 5th thanks to a single by Nick Barber followed by an error allowing both Daniel Hicks and Malcolm Rohlfing to come around and score tying the game at 3. Though the Lynx had tied it, they weren't content as Burkhart would reach on an error, allowing Quinn Blackman to race home, immediately followed by yet another Dante Messina single driving in Burkhart. Quinn Blackman singled in the bottom of the 6th for a pair of RBIs, plating both Myles Kruger and Malcolm Rohlfing. Dante Messina would get a chance with the bases loaded as he hit into a fielder's choice but was able to pick up another RBI after Quinn Blackman crossed the plate. The offensive onslaught continued into the 7th for the Lynx thanks to a bases-loaded catcher's interference call to extend the lead to 8. A pair of singles from Rush Bowman and Myles Kruger would bring the 13th run in to score, allowing the Lynx to complete the 10-run run rule and putting an early ending on game 1 with a 13-3 victory.

Game 2 had an eerily similar start to game 1 as another single from Dante Messina brought Quinn Blackman in to score to give the Lynx the early lead in the first. Shortly after, Daniel Hicks recorded a single of his own plating Eli Selby, and Rhodes led by 2. The Lynx never looked back from there as they continued to get on base and cause chaos, stealing a combined 8 bases as a team led by Ben Burkhart, who stole 3 bags of his own. Burkhart also doubled in the 2nd for an RBI, giving the Lynx a 3-0 lead. The wheels would fall off of the Panther's defense in the bottom of the 4th as they committed 4 errors, and the Lynx capitalized by putting up 3 runs. Quinn Blackman, Dante Messina, and Eli Selby would all record RBIs in that same inning. The game went to the bottom of the 8th with the Lynx up by 6, and a determined offense who refused to be complacent. Freshman Cooper Kuriger singled to record the first RBI of his college career, driving in another freshman in Charlie Meyer. A couple of singles from Mick Arney and Corbin Kinder, as well as Messina's reach on error, would be all it took to complete the second run rule of the weekend and the two-game sweep of Greenville University. Dante Messina recorded 5 RBIs in the game, and the Freshman Cooper Kuriger notched 3 hits in 4 at-bats to help the Lynx secure a 14-4 victory.

A red-hot Rhodes offense would head into Sunday to face a very challenging opponent in Augustana College, who was fresh off an 8-2 opening-day victory over Greenville. Fortunately, the pressure was taken off the shoulders of the offense thanks to a terrific start by Lynx ace Zach Sohosky, who hurled 6.0 complete innings in which he only gave up 2 hits and a single earned run while also striking out 9 of the 20 batters he faced. This would bring his season strikeout total to 17 through his first two starts. With confidence in their guy on the mound, the Lynx lineup went back to work as a double from Eli Selby followed by a single from Malcolm Rohlfing drove in Messina and Selby to give the Lynx a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th. The Lynx would tack on 4 more in the 6th, thanks to a handful of miscues by the Viking's defense. Corbin Kinder, Malcolm Rohlfing, Charlie Meyer, and Myles Kruger would all record RBIs in the inning. 6 runs from the Lynx paved the way for the bullpen to enter in relief for Sohosky. Colby Slaughter, Thomas LeMaster, and Will May would combine in a relief effort comprised of 4 innings of 2 run baseball and 4 strikeouts. Will May would slam the door for the Lynx with a solid outing lasting 1 1/3 innings of 4 up 4 down baseball. The final from Sunday would be a 7-3 Rhodes victory to complete an undefeated opening home stand. Rhodes improves their record to 4-1 on the season as they look to continue their success into the upcoming weekend. The Lynx will stay at Stauffer Field next weekend as they are set to play three more games against Franklin College, North Central College, and Webster University.
