Box Score After a big win at home last week, the Lynx football team went back on the road to Danville, Kentucky to take on the Centre College Colonels. Both teams delved deep into their playbooks and pulled out all kinds of fake punts, kicks, and trick plays in hopes of coming away with a conference victory.
The Rhodes offense took the field first and got off to a hot start as they drove down the field behind a 47-yard run from
Robert Daniel and capped off the drive with a 29-yard field goal from
Logan Ahern. Centre was quick to respond, however, as they found the end zone and took a 7-3 lead with 5:19 left in the first quarter. On Centre's following drive, Rhodes was able to force a turnover as freshman
Chyco Williams undercut the receiver and picked it off to give possession back to the Lynx. Immediately following, the Lynx offense took a gamble by running a fake punt on 4th and 10 deep in their own territory, and Kellen Gehres flew around the edge to pick up the first down and move the offense into Centre territory.
On the first play of the second quarter, the Lynx went back into their bag of tricks as they pulled out a double pass with
Evan Reeder throwing a backward pass to
Andrew Pickens who fired down the middle of the field to
Robert Daniel who caught it in the end zone to regain the lead for Rhodes 10-7. The Colonels pulled out some trickery of their own as they faked a field goal and threw it to the end zone, converting a 24-yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked by the Lynx, and the score remained 13-10 in favor of Centre with 9:43 remaining in the first half. Centre got the ball back soon thereafter and was able to find the end zone once again to extend their lead to 20-10 with 5:07 left in the first half. The Lynx offense responded with
Logan Ahern's second field goal of the game, this time from 24 yards to cut the Centre lead down to 20-13. The first half would end with a Centre field goal that extended their lead to 23-13, capping off an action-packed half of football.
Centre got the football to begin the second half and they wasted no time continuing the fast paced nature of the game as they marched down the field and scored once again, extending their lead to 30-13. However, the Lynx were not phased as
Evan Reeder connected with
Brent Barlow on a 77-yard lightning strike to keep pace with Centre. The score would now be 30-20 in favor of Centre with 10:27 to play in the 3rd quarter. Neither offense could be stopped early in the second half as Centre went down the field and scored again extending their lead to 36-20 after the extra point was missed.
Centre began to run away with the lead as they found the end zone again in the first minute of the 4th quarter, creating a 42-20 deficit for Rhodes to battle back from. The Lynx offense was unable to get anything going throughout the rest of the 4th quarter, and the Colonels would take the win by a final score of 49-20.
For the Lynx, the offense was led by
Brent Barlow who caught 5 passes and accounted for 119 yards and a receiving touchdown. Defensively,
Hart Penfield and
JD Davis led the team with 7 tackles each.
The loss moves the Lynx record to 3-6 (2-4) on the season. They will return home next week for the final game of the season against the Berry College Vikings. The game will kickoff at 1 pm from Crain Field and you can catch the live coverage of it on the Lynx Live Network.
