Matt Ellis Named Interim Head Football Coach

Rhodes College Athletics has named Matt Ellis '17 interim head football coach following Rich Duncan's decision to step down Monday morning.

"We are grateful for Coach Duncan's contributions to Rhodes College and the football program," said Director of Athletics Jim Duncan. "We appreciate his commitment to our student-athletes and wish him the best in his future endeavors. As we move forward, our focus remains on providing our student-athletes with the leadership and support they need to finish the season strong."

Ellis, a Rhodes alumnus and the Lynx defensive coordinator, assumes leadership as the program moves in a new direction with a focus on supporting its student-athletes and building toward future success.

A former Lynx cornerback and member of Rhodes' 2013 Southern Athletic Association championship team, Ellis returned to his alma mater in February 2025. In his first season as defensive coordinator, he helped develop two all-conference safeties, including a First Team All-SAA selection.

Ellis brings coaching experience from Rice University, Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Benedictine University and Millikin University. His background includes defensive coaching, special teams, recruiting and academic support, providing a strong foundation to lead the team through this transition.

Assistant coach Jalen Womble, also a Rhodes football alumnus, will take on an expanded role in the program's day-to-day operations. A 2023 graduate, Womble was a four-year starter and three-year team captain who served on the team's leadership council each season. He returned to Rhodes following graduation to coach the defensive line and brings a strong connection to the program and its student-athletes.

Rhodes College Athletics will begin a national search for the program's next head football coach following the conclusion of the 2026 season.
