Lynx Control the Tigers

The Rhodes College Field Hockey team started their fall break games in Sewanee, Tennessee. On Friday October 18, 2024, they faced the Sewanee Tigers to open official conference play. The Lynx pulled out an exciting 3-2 win against Sewanee, starting their weekend with a winning record.  

RECAP: RHODES VS. Sewanee  

The Tigers proved to be tough conference opponents. Sewanee's Caroline Bridges started the scoring at 29:52, ending the half with a 0-1 lead. The Lynx came out with intensity in the second half, tying the at 37:53 when Maria Zaporozhski deflected the ball into the cage off a penalty corner. Quickly after 39:05, Abbie Wallace found the back of the net, giving Rhodes the lead. After intense back and forth play, Layla Anderson scored at 51:26. The Tigers did not back down and Alexandra Schoener scored one final goal at 58:57 making the final score 3-2, a victory for the Rhodes College Lynx.

  • Rhodes College: 13 total shots (8 on goal), 4 saves, 7 penalty corners. 

  • Sewanee University: 14 total shots (6 on goal), 5 saves, 8 penalty corners. 

Key Performances:  

  • Reece Kugler: Played with composure across the midfield by maneuvering the ball around defenders and creating scoring opportunities.   

  • Samantha Ducey: Was a strong defensive force during an intense game. She provided strong tackles and transfers out of Rhodes defensive 25.  

  • Maria Zaporozhski: Capitalized on offensive opportunities by scoring a goal and providing an assist.  

Looking Forward: Rhodes vs Mary Washington University and Christopher Newport University 

The Rhodes college field hockey team remains on the road for their fall break games. On October 19, 2024, they have a match against the University of Mary Washington Eagles, Tennessee in Sewanee. Next, they travel to Salem, Virginia, to play the Chistopher Newport University Captains on October 21, 2024.
