Friday night the Rhodes Lynx women's basketball team take on the Berry Vikings on the road in Rome, Georgia. Both teams came into this contest undefeated in conference play.
The first quarter was not an aesthetically pleasing display of basketball as both teams played suffocating defense which led to both teams shooting an awful percentage from the field. Rhodes made three field goals on 25% shooting while Berry only made 2 field goals on 11% shooting. Berry was only able to outscore Rhodes in the first quarter by shooting and making all eight of their free throws.
Rhodes turned the ball over 7 times in the first quarter and 5 times in the second, but the difference in the second quarter was that the Lynx were more aggressive. They got back to what they do best by drawing fouls and getting to the paint. That along with their continued effort on defense is how the Lynx were able to outscore the Vikings 14-9 with 5 of the Vikings' 9 points coming from the free throw line.
Kearstyn Seay set the tone for the Lynx throughout the first half as she bullied her way into the paint over and over. On the defensive end she was in a stance hounding Berry's ball handlers as she bumped them off their path when they tried to drive. Kearstyn helped Rhodes end the half up 23-21 as she finished the first half with 8 points and four rebounds.
The third quarter was more of the same. The Lynx did not shoot a great percentage, but they were locked in the on the defensive side of the ball. They may have committed a lot of fouls, but free throws were the only way the Vikings were able to score as they shot 15% from the field and 0 of 7 from three. The Lynx made the Vikings' ball handlers uncomfortable and made every shot a tough shot. Rhodes' defense disrupted Berry's flow offensively and every shot that was open for Berry was still a tough shot because no one was in rhythm.
Last quarter of the ball game Berry fought their way back as they had their best shooting quarter of the game. They ended up cutting the lead to 1 off two made free throws with 1:12 remaining in the game. Rhodes was not rattled and the closed the game with their defense and points in the paint. The Lynx won 56-51. Even though they had the same number of points in the paint as Berry, turned the ball over more, and fouled more Rhodes found a way to win. They were just the tougher team and now they are 2-0 in conference looking to make it 3-0 as they play Oglethorpe University on Sunday. The leading scorers for the Lynx were
AC Milam with 17 and
Kearstyn Seay with 11.
