Friday night, the Rhodes College Lynx took on the Sewanee Tigers in the Mallory Gymnasium. The Lynx were coming off a tough weekend. They finished 0-2 because of last-second go-ahead shots. They hoped to shake off the losing slump they had been in against the Tigers since they were at their best at home.
The first half for the Lynx was the worst of the Lynx have played all year. Their starting lineup for this game differed from their usual one as they went big with every position, excluding the point guard being played by someone six-foot-five or taller. With this big lineup, they came out in a 1-3-1 defensive scheme that slowed the Tigers down for a couple of possessions. Unfortunately, the Tigers started dissecting the 1-3-1 and hitting deep threes. On the offensive end, the Lynx looked stagnant as they settled for jumpers and heavily contested layups. This resulted in the Lynx being down by 27 by halftime, as the score was 17-44.
In the second half, the beginning wasn't looking so good, as they were down 33 points with 12:14 remaining. The next four minutes after that were okay, but with 8:00 remaining, something in the Lynx clicked, and they showed how great of a team they should be. The person who sparked this was Johnathan Prange, who has missed most of the season due to injury. Prange came in for five minutes, scored 7 points, grabbed two offensive rebounds, and gave 110% effort. His effort rubbed off on the team and resulted in everyone flying around the court on defense and playing unselfishly on offense. The lead was cut to ten with three minutes to go because of a barrage of threes from
Trevor Lombard. In the second half, Rhodes had two opponents, Sewanee and Time. They outperformed Sewanee as they had fifty-six to their thirty-six. However, time beat them as it ran out, and Rhodes lost 73-80. The leading scorers were
Phil Dotson with 12 and
Trevor Lombard with 21.
Sunday afternoon, the Rhodes College men's basketball team played Centre. Rhodes is trying to get that first win to start a streak and improve their 2-6 record in the conference.
Rhodes came into the first half full of energy but was composed. The Centre used various defensive schemes and made effective adjustments to keep Rhodes uncomfortable. Their composure helped the Lynx play unselfishly and smartly, leading to 10 first-half assists with only three turnovers. The only concern was the number of offensive rebounds the Colonels were getting, but besides that, the Lynx were confident and in charge as they finished the half leading 37-33.
In the second half, the Lynx started the half strong as they got up eleven, their largest game lead. Even though thirteen minutes were remaining, the Lynx had all the momentum and a big enough lead to put the Colonels away. However, after the Colonels called a timeout, Centre went on a 9-0 run, followed by a 9-4. Despite being a close game with seven minutes left, the Lynx lost their composure and energy, leading to several consecutive defensive lapses. Everything started going downhill, and before they knew it, Rhodes had lost to Centre 63-72. Three Lynx players scored in double digits.
Phil Dotson had 12, Arness Georgetown had 10, and
Max Adelman had 10.
