Friday evening, the women's basketball took on their rivals, the Sewanee Tigers, on the road. The Lynx are coming off a blowout victory against Birmingham-Southern College and look to capture their fifth win in conference play.
The first half wasn't a high-scoring half, as jumpers were not falling for either team, but that didn't stop the Lynx from outplaying the Tigers. Rhodes' defense paved the way for the Lynx to play winning basketball without hitting shots like usual. Sewanee was leaving everything, so they shot short, whether layups or jumpers. Their suffocating defense only allowed seven made field goals out of thirty-three attempts and sent Sewanee to the line once in twenty minutes of action. The score at halftime was 23-17, with Rhodes being up 6.
During the third quarter, Sewanee's home-court advantage started kicking in as they outscored Rhodes 24-22. In this quarter, Rhodes' over-aggressiveness defensively resulted in six trips to the line for Sewanee as they shot more free throws than field goals. The Lynx weren't worried and finished the game by scoring another 22 points in the fourth quarter. This time, the Lynx were locked in on both sides of the ball as they held Sewanee to 9 points. When the buzzer sounded and the game was over, the final score was 67-50. The Lynx had four players score in double-digits:
Avery Marsh with 16,
Catherine Althoff with 15,
Giana Vlahakos with 14, and
Kearstyn Seay with 11. With this win, Rhodes' conference record improved to 5-1, and they are tied with Centre for second in the SAA standings. Their next game will be against Centre, and it will be exciting to see which team comes out of the contest definitively in second place.
