Rhodes Lynx Fall to Centre in Conference Matchup

Sunday afternoon, the Rhodes Lynx were on the road as they played the Centre College Colonels. Both teams were tied for second in the SAA standings with a conference record of 5-1. This was their first matchup since Rhodes defeated Centre in the 2023 SAA conference championship game.

The first quarter went well for Rhodes. Even though they were missing a couple of high-percentage shots, Centre only outscored them by 2. Their jumpers weren't falling, so Rhodes started using their size advantage.

In the second quarter, Rhodes struggled because of their high volume of turnovers due to the Colonels' post-defense. Centre forced tough shots, and their double teams caused the Lynx to overthrow the ball out of bounds. At the end of the second quarter, the Lynx went on a four-minute scoring drought, fortunately broken by back-to-back and-ones from Giana Vlahakos and A'niya Lagarde, which gave their team momentum leading into the half. The score at halftime was 27-33, with Rhodes being down 6.

As the third quarter began, Avery Marsh kept that momentum going as she got into Centre's passing lanes and took off for the fastbreak layup. The Lynx kept chopping at the lead, but with a series of defensive lapses that led to corner threes and wide-open layups, they found themselves down eight at the end of the third.

Down by eight, the Lynx scored five quick points, but they could not stop the Colonels. It didn't help that they had four turnovers and missed a couple of open layups. This caused them to go on a three-minute scoring drought that helped Centre seal the game. Rhodes was defeated 62-71. The leading scorers were Avery with 17, Catherine Althoff with 13, and A'niya with 10.
