The Rhodes College Lynx were on the road Sunday afternoon to play the Centre Colonel. The Lynx was coming off a loss to Sewanee off a buzzer-beating three. Their opponent, Centre, is trying to go on a winning streak as they beat Hendrix on Friday. Both teams were 2-4 in conference and look to move up in the SAA standings.
Rhodes played a great half as they shot 44% from the field, 57% from three, and 87% from the free throw line. That and their efforts to outrebound Centre by six should have been enough to be in control during that first half. However, they couldn't, as they turned the ball over ten times and only forced four from the Colonels. This resulted in the Colonels getting more scoring opportunities from the fastbreak, which helped because their half-court offense struggled. Down five with a minute to go before halftime, the Lynx was able to tie the game 35-35 with a last-second corner three from Arness Georgetown. Arness was the leading scorer at the half for the Lynx, with seven total.
The second half was competitive, as no team could gain control of the ballgame. The lead changed 11 times, and the score was tied 13 times. Both teams struggled to score, shooting under 40% from the field. The Lynx shot the ball better from the line than their opponent, but just like last game, a couple of untimely, late-game free-throw misses hurt them. In the previous thirty-eight seconds of the match, Rhodes had a sequence where they only made one of two free throws as they tied 63-63 and missed capitalizing on a one-and-one opportunity as they missed the first free throw while up 64-63. Centre got the rebound, called a timeout, and ran a play that got them an and-one. They made the free throw, and Rhodes called a timeout to draw up a play that earned them a pretty good look at the rim. The layup was too strong, and Rhodes was defeated 64-66. This contest's Leading scorers are
Phil Dotson,
Jack Dempsey with 12, and
Shawn Jones Jr with 11.
With this loss, Rhodes is on a three-game losing streak that they hope to snap as they are back home next weekend.
