Friday, the Rhodes College men's basketball team played the Millsaps College Majors. Rhodes was coming off a road trip in Georgia, where they went 0-2 against Berry and Oglethorpe. They looked to bounce back at home, where they are at their best, and have only lost two home games, both of which were in the final minute.
The Lynx did indeed bounce back as they came out, and 4 of the 5 Lynx players hit a barrage of three-pointers on the Majors to start the ball game. Every three scored in those first three minutes were assists because of the strong, attacking drive that got Lynx shooters open. As the subs came in, the Lynx cooled off for a bit as they went on a two-minute scoring drought, but that didn't stop them from keeping the Majors scoreless from 10:33 to the 5:36 mark. After the Lynx scored their first bucket to end their drought, they went on a 16-6 run to close the half. As the buzzer sounded for halftime, the score was 37-22.
In the second half, Rhodes dominated Millsaps even while navigating foul trouble. Millsaps kept bullying their way into the paint and drawing fouls. Their ability to remove those fouls caused three Rhodes players to have four fouls, and they were one foul from fouling out with 10 minutes to go in the second half. Unfortunately for Millsaps, three-pointers are more than layups and free throws, as Rhodes shot lights out. The two Lynx players draining these three-pointers all game long were
Trevor Lombard and
Phil Dotson, as they each made six threes. It wasn't only the Lynx's offense that won them this game, but their total commitment to being unselfish and more aggressive than the Majors. The Lynx finished the game outrebounding the Majors by 17 and collecting 21 assists on 30 made field goals. Notable performances for Rhodes are
Phil Dotson with 23 points,
Trevor Lombard with 20 points, and
Jack Dempsey with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Rhodes is back in the win column as they defeated Millsaps 88-64 and improved their conference record to 2-2. The Lynx look to go undefeated this weekend and get above .500 in the conference as they face the Birmingham-Southern College Panthers on Sunday in Mallory Gymnasium.Â
