On Friday, January 19, the Rhodes College men's basketball team was on the road as they played against the Sewanee Tigers in their first conference matchup. Both teams are coming off a loss last weekend and are looking to get back into the winning column. This game did not disappoint, as it came down to the previous shot.
The first half of the contest started with both teams feeling each other out a bit, as each team had over ten points six minutes into the half. Rhodes got onto the board with Arness Georgetown draining a wide-open three from the right wing. The game was very competitive as each team matched each other's momentum-swinging plays. Neither team could maintain a lead throughout this game, as it changed 35 times. When the buzzer sounded for the first half, the halftime score was 32-33, with Rhodes being down one.
In the second half, it was more of the same. The two rivals were evenly matched and were going through the same struggles. Both teams shot an alarming percentage from three and turned the ball around the same amount. Since they weren't making threes, they went to the basket and generated many shooting fouls. Unfortunately, the Lynx left a lot of points at the line. Down one,
Phil Dotson made one of two free throws to send the game to overtime. During overtime, the Lynx made 4 four out of their five shots attempted but missed two free throws out of six. They ended up losing because of a buzzer-beater three from Sewanee.Â
With this loss, the Lynx are 8-9 for the season and 2-4 in conference. The leading scorers for this game were Phil with 32, Arness with 13, and
Trevor Lombard with 12.
