MEMPHIS, Tenn. (March 8, 2023) -- Despite Rhodes taking an early 4-2 lead, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute outscored the Lynx 14-5 in the middle thirty minutes of the game to pull away and secure an 18-10 victory.
Avery Burke found the back of the net in the first 30 seconds of the game to kick off a 1-0 lead. RPI answered back with a goal from Sophie Goddard before the Lynx put two more on the board with back-to-back goals from
Caroline Kardian and
Anna Erskine. Lauren DeLeo added her first of the night to bring RPI within one goal heading into the second quarter.
Within a minute of the second quarter, Rhodes struck again with Burke finding
Emily Bruner for her sole goal of the night. RPI's Quinn Wollard answered back with a goal of her own. Despite Wollard receiving a yellow card for her dangerous follow through, the Engineers scored a woman-down goal from Megan Shay to tie the game 4-4. After eight scoreless minutes of play, RPI took the lead with Wollard's second goal of the game. Lauren DeLeo extended the lead with the final two goals of the quarter to put RPI on top 7-4 at the half.
Heading into the second half, Burke and Goddard both traded two goals apiece to make it 9-6. The Engineers then went on a 4-0 scoring run before Rhodes rattled back goals from
Carina Wesker and
Chloe Parker. The Lynx wouldn't get another goal on the scoreboard until the final five minutes of the game with Wesker adding a pair to end the game. Draw controls proved to be a difference maker in the matchup. Rhodes kept it even in the first half winning 6-12 but faltered in the second half only securing 3-19.
Burke and Wesker each finished with three goals apiece for Rhodes. Burke finished with five points by adding two assists, as
Emily Bruner dished three assists with a goal for four points.
Emma Bradley added 12 saves on the day, breaking the 300 save barrier for her career.
Emma Norris led the defense with four groundballs while
Bari Pinkett and Bradley each scooped up three.
DeLeo finished with give goals while Goddard, Wollard and Rylie Maready each finished with three goals apiece for RPI. Lisa Boehmer finished with five points from two goals and three assists.
The Lynx head to Siesta Key, Florida to take on three nonconference opponents during Spring Break. Rhodes will kick off play Monday, March 13 against Babson College at 5:00 p.m. EST at host Saint Leo University.
