First Quarter Lifts Rhodes over Hope College

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (March 23, 2023) — The Hope College Flying Dutch netted the first goal of the game but the Lynx would score the next 11 straight en route to a 24-14 victory at home. Avery Burke led all goalscorers with a career-high 7 goals on the afternoon. 

Hope jumped on the board first with Molly Frederickson finding Ruthie Anderson in front of cage to kick things off. It would be the only Hope goal of the first quarter. Hope won the next draw control, but after an Emma Bradley save, the Lynx charged up the field and Burke scored her first of the game. The Lynx would go on to control the momentum, winning 7 of the next 10 draw controls to ensure possession. In the 11-0 scoring blitz, Burke notched an additional two goals while Chloe Parker scored four, Caroline Kardian, added two and Emily Bruner tallied two goals and three assists. 

Anderson kicked off the second quarter in the same fashion as the first and notched her second goal for Hope. Burke responded with back-to-back goals with feeds from Bruner and Sophia Horowitz to extended the lead back up to 13-2. The Flying Dutch snagged the next draw control and momentum swung for Hope. Julia Brown scored a woman-up goal with Juli Kirkpatrick dishing out the assist. Hope went on to win the next three draw controls and score the next three goals with Brown netting two additional goald and Kerrigan Brown adding a fast break tally of her own. Bari Pinkett pulled in the next draw control for the Lynx, leading to a goal from Anna Erskine and a pause in the Hope scoring run. Julia Brown pulled in the next two draw controls and scored the last two goals to enter halftime down 14-8. 

Horowitz and the Lynx were the first to strike in the third quarter, extending the lead 15-8. Hope responded with another Julia Brown tally on a woman-up opportunity. Both teams were playing a very physical game and Rhodes went on a 4-0 scoring run with two goals scored on their own woman-up opportunities. Burke scored twice while Kardian tallied another and found Carina Wesker for her first of the day. Molly Frederickson added back-to-back goals for Hope before Grace Williams added another Lynx goal off a free position shot. The Flying Dutch added another goal from Kerrigan Brown in the last few seconds of the quarter, bringing the scoreboard to 20-12. 

Rhodes kicked off the final stretch with Molly Martiner and Molly Heidrick finding Parker and Wesker respectively to extend the lead back to 10 goals. Wesker and Heidrick scored the final Lynx goals to close out the game. 

Avery Burke led all scorers with seven goals, setting a new career-high for goals and points. Chloe Parker also notched seven points off five goals and two assists. Carina Wesker and Caroline Kardian each added three goals and one assist while Emily Bruner tallied two goals and four assists. 

Bari Pinkett scooped up six ground balls and four draw controls while causing three turnovers. Isabella Sklena added two caused turnovers and two ground balls for the Lynx defense. In the cage for Rhodes, Emma Bradley stopped 8 on the day while Olivia Wood tallied 4 saves in the final quarter. 

The win puts Rhodes at 5-5 on the season as the team resumes SAA conference play this weekend. The Lynx will travel to Sewanee for a matchup against the Tigers on Sunday, March 26 at 12:00pm CST.
