Lynx Storm the Mountains

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 26, 2023) — The Rhodes Lynx outscored the Sewanee Tigers 10-2 in the second quarter to pull away and leave Sewanee with a dominant 23-10 victory. Freshman Caroline Kardian set a new personal best with 11 draw controls on the day.

Rhodes kicked off the game with Kardian pulling in the first draw control and moving it around the offensive end before Emily Bruner found Carina Wesker for the first tally of the day just 25 seconds into the game. Sewanee answered with a goal from Emma Burns off a strong crease roll. Lynx went on a 3-0 scoring run with tallies coming from Bruner, Wesker and Molly Martiner. Burns scored another goal for the Tigers off a failed Lynx clear for her second of the day to make it 4-2. Rhodes went into the first quarter break with a 5-2 lead thanks to Bruner's second goal.

After back and forth possessions to start the second quarter, the Lynx struck first with an unassisted goal from Avery Burke. The Tigers answered just 15 seconds later with Casey Thompson scoring a fast break transition goal. Despite Sewanee winning a stretch of draw controls, the Lynx defense stayed strong and pushed the ball into the attacking end where Kardian, Bruner, Wester and Chloe Parker all scored, extending the lead to 10-3. Sewanee got back on the board when Thompson found Bissy Muller for a woman-up goal. This was the last goal for the Tigers in the second quarter.

Rhodes won 4-of-5 draw controls and went on a 5-0 scoring run to finish the first half with a 15-4 lead. Kardian scored twice, with one goal coming from a free position shot. Burke tallied back-to-back goals and Parker found the back of the net with a twizzler.

The Lynx picked up in the third quarter where they left off with Kardian winning the draw control and scoring a woman-up goal. Rhodes went on to win 4 of the next 5 draw controls and scored 4 of the next five goals. Parker and Wesker each scored another while Molly Heidrick scored back-to-back tallies off crease roll attempts. Sally Herrington scored on a free position attempt to stop the Rhodes offensive run and Thompson scored the final game of the quarter.

The physical play continued into the fourth quarter with Sewanee picking up their fourth yellow card of the day. Madison Recker took advantage with the woman-up opportunity to score her first Lynx goal of the day. Grace Williams added the next goal on a woman-down fast break opportunity. Caroline Harlick and Sierra Anderson traded free position goals for the Tigers and Lynx, respectively brining the Rhodes lead to 23-8. Sewanee then won consecutive draw controls and scored on each of the next offensive possessions but it was too late to really chip away at the Lynx lead.

Emma Bradley stopped 8 shots in cage while Olivia Wood made 2 saves in the final quarter.

Rhodes edged out Sewanee on the hustle plays, snagging 19-36 draw controls and scooping up 19-36 ground balls. Kardian led all players with 11 draw controls and seven different Lynx grabbed two ground balls each.

Emma Burns and Sally Herrington led Sewanee scorers with two a piece. Marlin Price picked up 9 draw controls and Sarah Powers recorded 5 saves on the afternoon.

The Lynx return to play on Saturday, April 1 when they host Centre College at 12:00pm CST on Mason Field.
