This weekend, the Rhodes College Women's basketball team headed to Marshall, Texas, to open up their 2023-2024 season. The women are the reigning SAA conference champions and will seek to defend their title this year. The Lynx competed in the East Texas Baptist University tournament, playing two Saturday and Sunday games. The Lynx first played East Texas Baptist and then the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
In the first quarter, the Lynx allowed ETBU to put up 18 points to their 9, but the Lynx answered, putting up 17 in the second quarter, leaving the score at halftime only down by 1 point to the Tigers. The Lynx playing competitive ball kept a tight score the entire game, but points by fast break and turnovers in the 4th quarter sealed the game for the Lynx loss. The final score was 53-49. The leading scorer for the Lynx was
Avery Marsh, who scored 15 points. Junior
Kearstyn Seay had a great game as well, having a double-double with 12 rebounds and 13 points scored.
The Lynx then played Mary Hardin-Baylor. Both teams competed tough, and the half ended with the Lynx up 29-26. The Lynx struggled in the 4th quarter, putting up 2 points to Mary Hardin and the Crusaders putting up 25.
Catherine Althoff led the Lynx in points scored, with 16 in this game.
The Lynx coming out strong helped set the tempo for their games against these tough teams, yet they couldn't finish the job. The Lynx finish their opening weekend 0-2 but hold their heads high as they return to Memphis this weekend to host their first home games of the season. The Lynx will tip off against the University of the Ozarks on Friday, November 17th at 6 pm. They will also play on Saturday at 5 pm against Huntingdon College.
