After coming off a 3-0 win against Mississippi University for Women this past Tuesday, the Lynx Volleyball squad headed to Georgia for their last two conference regular season away matches. The Lynx, coming into the match, were 7-13 on the season and 3-10 for SAA conference play. The Lynx started their weekend in Rome, Georgia, to face off against the nationally ranked #13 Berry Vikings. The last match against Berry, on October 6th at home, the girls took a 1-4 loss. The Vikings (18-4, 12-0 SAA) are the current conference leaders and would be a tough face-off for the Lynx on Saturday.
The Lynx played a challenging set 1 against the Vikings. The teams battled head to head and kept a relatively close score until the Lynx hit a big rally at 10-13, where the sophomore middle blocker Sophie Snodgrass served the Lynx to a 16-13 lead. The girls couldn't hold the lead, and Berry took the set 21-25. Set 2 started tight for the Lynx and Vikings, yet Berry had two big rallies that won the set 14-25. Rhodes battled hard to take a set off of Berry in the 3rd, yet fell 19-25. The Lynx had 50 digs in the match, led by Meg Gebhart with 12, and 33 kills led by Yzzi Dsamou.
After facing the nationally ranked Vikings, the Lynx continued to Atlanta, Georgia, to face off with the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels (9-9, SAA 4-8). In the past matchup at home on October 7th, the Lynx lost a close match with the Petrels 1-3. Going into this match, the Lynx held their heads high after the loss to Berry and came ready to play. Game play started tight until the Lynx led a 6-point rally at 20-18, where senior libero Maggie Mathis served the set 25-18. The Lynx didn't stop there and took a tough set two from the Petrels at 25-22, closed out with a kill from Kym Young. Riding the momentum going into set 3, the Lynx came out hot. Rhodes had a few big rallies during the set. Freshman Rachel Clarke shut it down to complete the Rhodes win with a big kill with a final score of 25-21. The Lynx were led in kills by Dsamou with 11. Another standout attacker was Kym Young, hitting an impressive .438 on the day. Mackenzie Geer led the assists, having 20 and 16 digs by Maggie Mathis for the match.
Going 1-1 for the weekend, the Lynx move to an overall record of 8-14 and 3-10 in conference play. The Lynx head back to Memphis this next weekend to finish their last regular season conference play of the year. Centre College Colonels will come to Memphis on Saturday the 29th to play and the Sewanee Tigers on Sunday the 30th. After coming off the weekend with a shutout win taking down the Stormy Petrels, the Lynx aim to improve their conference record this weekend.
