Lynx Volleyball Splits Weekend at Home

The Rhodes College Volleyball team had a big weekend at home with two matches to finish the regular season SAA gameplay. On Saturday, Rhodes celebrated senior libero Maggie Mathis with a senior day presentation. On Sunday, the Lynx hosted their Dig Pink match, which supports the Side-Out Foundation to raise money for metastatic breast cancer awareness and research.

The Centre College Colonels (12-2 SAA) traveled to Memphis for Saturday's match, resulting in a loss for the Lynx. Rhodes took the first set from the Colonels, coming out with a stellar offense and setters Mackenzie Geer and Emma Clark moving the ball well across the pins. The final score of set 1 was 25-22. Set two, Centre took a 10-point lead, yet Rhodes had a 7-point run led by Emma Clark to get the Lynx back in the fight. Yet, it wasn't enough to take the set off of Centre, and the final score was 18-25. Set 3 was another well-fought set, but late errors led to the Lynx dropping another set 21-25. The girls battled at the net in set 4 (23-25), the closest scoring set of the match, but Centre took the win on Saturday, leaving the Lynx with a 1-3 loss.

The girls didn't let this loss affect their match on Sunday against the Sewanee Tigers (7-7 SAA) and came out ready to play, resulting in a 5-set thriller win for the Lynx! The Rhodes offensive in the first set the tone for the match, closing out the set with five kills in a row by three different Lynx attackers assisted by Emma Clark. Rhodes took the first set 25-23 and did not let up the pressure against the Tigers in the second, taking the set 25-17. In set 3, the Lynx had a bit of a hiccup and lost the set 11-25 due to an early lead and serving pressure from Sewanee. Again, in set 4, Sewanee took an early lead, coming to set point with the Lynx down 16-24. Rhodes battled back with a 7-point rally, yet the Tigers won set 4 22-25. With Rhodes having the momentum going into the final tiebreaker set, Maggie Mathis served the team into a 6-point lead, and with ease, the Lynx won set 5 15-8. Mathis led the team defense in digs with 21 in the match, and Hope Wehrli with five blocks. For the Lynx offensive, Mackenzie Geer led with 21 assists and Yzzi Dsamou with 15 kills.

Splitting the matches for the weekend,1-1, the Lynx record moves to 9-15 and 3-11 in SAA play. Next, the Lynx will travel to Atlanta, Georgia, to play in the Emory University tournament on November 3rd and 4th. They will play Randolf-Macon College at 1 p.m. Friday, Emory University at 5 p.m. Friday, Berea College at 9 a.m., and Maryville College at 11:15 a.m. Saturday. Finishing the weekend with a thrilling win, Rhodes College Volleyball hopes for a successful next weekend, playing some of the nation's best DIII teams.
