Rhodes Tops Sewanee 30-10 To Win the Orgill Cup

This Saturday, the Tigers of Sewanee traveled to Memphis to take on the Lynx in the long-awaited 90th installation of the historic Rhodes-Sewanee rivalry. Widely regarded as the longest rivalry in the South, the all-time record was tied after the 2022 game, 43-43-3. Since the introduction of the Orgill Cup in 1954, however, Rhodes holds an impressive 38-29-1 lead in the series.

Game number 90 was a historic one for the Lynx, as they dominated the Tigers 30-10 and took control of the all-time series lead for the first time in history. The all-time record is now in favor of the Lynx, 44-43-3. The Lynx have also now won 10 out of the last 11 against Sewanee.

Sewanee received the game's first kickoff, but the Lynx quickly took the ball back with an interception by Nick Floyd. The Lynx did not score on their first offensive possession, but the Lynx defense forced a turnover on downs to prepare for their first scoring drive. On the second play of the drive, Evan Reeder connected a deep pass to Austin Smith, who ran 75 yards for a Lynx touchdown. Myles Kruger converted the extra point.

In the second quarter, following a long drive from Houston Wilhelm, Rhodes took the lead 14-3 with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Wilhelm to Alex LeBlanc. Sewanee scored again, and the game was a tight 14-10 in favor of the Lynx heading into halftime.

With Evan Reeder back in the game at quarterback for the Lynx, the offense put together an impressive 60-yard drive, capped off with another touchdown reception from Alex LeBlanc. The rest of the 3rd quarter was slow, but the Lynx defense forced a missed field goal and stayed in the lead, 20-10.

The Lynx stepped on the gas in the 4th quarter, as Houston Wilhelm quickly found himself in the endzone with a 2-yard touchdown scramble. The extra point from Barrett Buchanan was good. After another clock-chewing drive behind Evan Reeder and Elijah Bane, Myles Kruger converted a 25-yard field goal to put the Lynx up 30-10.

The Tiger offense tried to piece together a scoring drive to end the game, but a sack from Jake Duncan and a pass breakup from Nick Floyd ensured that that didn't happen, as the clock expired and the Lynx won 30-10. On the offensive side, Wilhelm led the team in yards at 111 with one passing and one rushing touchdown, while Reeder recorded 96 yards passing and two passing touchdowns. Robert Daniel led the game in rushing with 131, and Austin Smith led the Lynx in receiving with 110. On defense, Evan Byrd led the team in total tackles with nine and added on a pass breakup. Thomas Conroy led the defensive line, recording eight total tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks. Thomas's showing against Sewanee earned him SAA Defensive Player of the Week honors.

This Orgill Cup victory was huge for the Lynx, as they now have possession of the all-time series and additionally lead the Orgill Cup race 39-29-1. Rhodes is now 5-2 on the 2023 season and 3-2 in conference play.

The Lynx will now prepare to travel to Little Rock this weekend to take on the Warriors of Hendrix at 6 p.m. in War Memorial Stadium.
