Majors Take Series From Lynx

Millsaps won two of three games this weekend

JACKSON, Miss. (April 10, 2022) - The Rhodes Lynx had their win-streak hit double digits by defeating the Millsaps Majors in game one on Saturday, but dropped the final two games of the series to finish the weekend 1-2. The Lynx now stand at 19-12-1 overall, and 10-5 in SAA play.

Game One
Rhodes 12
Millsaps 5

The Lynx offense stayed hot with a seven-run win in game one. After Millsaps took a 2-1 lead in the second on a pair of unearned runs, Rhodes exploded for five runs in the fourth. Dante Messina walked to lead off, followed by a John McNair single, and Wood Kimbrough getting plunked to load the bases. A walk to Will Heurtin brought in the tying run, and prompted a pitching change. The move did not pan out for the Majors as Ben Wilson launched a grand slam over the fence to give Rhodes a 6-2 lead.

Sloppy fielding from the Majors led to another big inning for Rhodes in the sixth. With one out, Malcolm Rholfing reached on an error. He was joined on the bases by Peter York via a single, and then scored when Messina added a single of his own. McNair continued the hit parade with a single to load the bases for Kimbrough, who was then hit by a pitch again to drive in a run the painful way. Heurtin and Wilson each picked up RBI shortly thereafter, and then the final run of the inning came on a wild pitch to give Rhodes a 11-2 lead. A three-run homer for Millsaps and a fifth error by the Majors that scored York in the ninth created the final score of 12-5.

Rhodes collected eleven hits in the game, led by York's three. Wilson drove in five runs. Nick Ferazzi took home the win with an impressive outing of six innings, four hits, zero earned runs and two strikeouts.

Game Two
Millsaps 11
Rhodes 4

The Majors dominated game two thanks to a strong outing from starter Wil Wood. The Lynx actually struck first in this one, plating a pair in the second inning. Kimbrough reached on a single, and would come in to score on a sac bunt and throwing error. Two batters later, Heurtin came across on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Millsaps took over in the fourth with a pair of home runs and a double leading to four runs and the lead. The answer from Rhodes came on another wild pitch that allowed McNair to touch home to cut the lead to 4-3. Millsaps put the game out of reach with three rusn in the fourth and four in the sixth. Rhodes added their final run on an RBI groundout from York that scored Burkhart.

Burkhart was the only Lynx with multiple hits, one of which was a triple. Jaxon Cady took the loss on the mound for Rhodes.

Game Three (Sunday)
Millsaps 8
Rhodes 4

A pitcher's duel led things off in the rubber match as CJ Carron and Jackson Hood each tossed four innings of shutout baseball. In the top of the fifth, Bryce Anderson scored with two outs on an error from the Majors. A York single put two men on for Messina, who promptly tripled to drive in both runners. A wild pitch allowed Messina to score, giving Rhodes a 4-0 lead. Millsaps was able to chop the lead by two runs in the bottom half when a single and a throwing error allowed a pair to come across.

Millsaps would take the lead for good in the seventh inning by taking advantage of Rhodes miscues. Two hit batters and an error loaded the bases with one out. Two singles and sacrifice bunt in three consecutive at bats brought in four Majors, and made the score 6-4. They would add two more runs in the eighth on a sac fly and a wild pitch for the final of 8-4.

York had three hits and a run in this one to lead the offense. Carron took a no decision after tossing 5.1 innings with eight strikeouts and one earned run allowed.

Rhodes will complete their end of the home-and-home series with crosstown rival Christian Brothers on Tuesday, April 12 before traveling to Georgia for an important three-game conference series with Berry College. The teams will play twice on Friday, April 15 and once on Saturday the 16th..
