Rhodes Dominates in SAA Season Opener

Rhodes defeated Birmingham Southern 21-2 on Saturday afternoon

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March 5, 2022) - Following a tough home loss earlier in the week, the Rhodes Lynx were back on track Saturday with a statement 21-2 win over the Birmingham Southern Panthers. The win moves Rhodes to 3-2 (1-0 SAA) while BSC drops to 3-2 (0-1 SAA).

Rhodes struggled to find the net on Wednesday, scoring just five goals against a tough Mary Washington squad. On Saturday, they reached that benchmark within the first six minutes of the game. The Lynx showed their aggression early on with Avery Burke and Payton Bennett each scoring in the first minute of the game. Bennett would add two more before the first horn, and was joined in the scoring column by Baylee Barker (2), Chloe Parker, Emily Bruner, Anna Erskine, and Molly Martiner. The Lynx defense was phenomenal, allowing zero goals in the first and forcing 13 Panther turnovers.

Barker and Carina Wesker scored early in the second to make it 12-0, but a netter from Lizzie LaVangie spoiled the shutout. Grace Williams and Izzy Parker also scored in the quarter for Rhodes to make it a 14-1 ballgame at half.

Kathleen Napier opened the scoring in the third for BSC, giving them their final goal of the game. Madison Recker would net a pair of goals in the third, and was joined by Parker and Molly Heidrick. Rhodes then added three more in the fourth courtesy of Heidrick, Mary Marsden and Burke.

The 21 goals for the Lynx is a season-high mark. Bennett and Barker led the way with three apiece. A total of thirteen different Lynx scored at least once, and six players scored multiple times. Emily Bruner dished out six assists in the game. In the net, Emma Bradley earned the win with five saves and a .714 save%. She then ceded the goal to freshman Olivia Wood, who made her collegiate debut with two saves and zero goals allowed in 16:44 of action.

It's a quick turnaround for the Lynx who will take the field on Sunday against Oberlin on the campus of Sewanee. Faceoff is set for 10:00 am.
