Eagles Soar Past Lynx

Mary Washington defeated Rhodes 14-5 on Wednesday afternoon

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (March 2, 2022) - Rhodes suffered their first home loss since February 21, 2020 on Wednesday, falling to the Mary Washington Eagles by a score of 14-5. The loss moves Rhodes to 2-2 on the year while Mary Washington also moves to .500 at 1-1.

Katie Blair put the Eagles on the board in the first minute with an unassisted goal. Seven minutes later, they added a second. Then it was Baylee Barker who bounced a shot past the MWU goalkeeper to split the lead in half at 2-1. Blair netted a man down goal with three minutes to go, followed by a score from Molly Daw to make 4-1 at the first buzzer.

The first half of the second quarter was scoreless as both teams played solid defense. Carina Wesker found the net for Rhodes halfway through to make it a 4-2 game. Unfortunately, that was the only goal in the period for the Lynx, while the Eagles scored three times before the half to make it 7-2 at the break.

Again, it was Rhodes who started the scoring in quarter three, as she found the net for a second time. Following the pattern of the day, Mary Washington responded with four unanswered goals to push the score to 11-3.

The lead ran all the way up to 14-3 at one point in the fourth. Rhodes added two late netters courtesy of Payton Bennett and Izzy Parker, but it was not enough as the Lynx fell 14-5.

The Eagles outshot the Lynx 33-22, and also collected more groundballs (23-18) and had fewer turnovers (14-18). Emma Bradley saved 12 shots in the loss for the Lynx.

Next up for Rhodes is a pair of road games this weekend. They will open conference play at Birmingham Southern on Saturday, and then take on Oberlin on the campus of Sewanee on Sunday.
