Lynx Fight for OT Win Over Colorado College

Avery Burke netted the game winner in extra time

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (February 25, 2022) - Women's lacrosse secured their first win of the season in dramatic fashion, taking down the Colorado College Tigers by a score of 11-10 in overtime on Friday afternoon. The win moves Rhodes to 1-1 on the young season while Colorado falls to 0-1.

The Lynx came out hot in the first quarter with Avery Burke and Payton Bennett (twice) scoring in the first five minutes. Colorado managed to net a pair before the first horn to make it 3-2 after one.

It only took 70 seconds for Baylee Barker to find the net, extending the Lynx lead to 4-2. The Tigers came storming back however, scoring three unanswered to take a one goal lead. After Carina Wesker equalized with two minutes to go, each team added one more before halftime to head into the break tied at six. Bennett was responsible for the last goal of the half for Rhodes, her first hat trick of the young season.

Colorado was aggressive out of the break, and found the net twice early into the third quarter. From that point on, Rhodes buckled down and played phenomenal defense, not allowing the Tigers to find the net again in the quarter. Meanwhile, Avery Burke, Emily Bruner, and Bennett each scored to give Rhodes a one-goal advantage heading into the fourth.

Five minutes into the quarter, Barker gave Rhodes a two-goal lead with her fifth goal of the season. Rhodes was able to kill time for the next six minutes, but couldn't get all the way to zero before Colorado made their comeback. Tobin Lonergan took advantage of a man-up situation with 3:24 to go to bring the Tigers within one. Forty seconds later, in another man-up scenario, Caroline Shay tied the game with a goal of her own. The game would then head to overtime.

In the extra period, each team swapped possession a few times before Avery Burke was able to end the excitement with a laser past the Colorado goalkeeper to give Rhodes their first win of the year.

Burke ended the game with three goals, five shots on goal, and two ground balls. Bennett was the leading scorer for both teams with four. Emma Bradley played strong between the pipes, accumulating 17 saves over the course of the game.

Colorado will play Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday while Rhodes enjoys a day off. The Lynx will then suit up and take on the Titans on Sunday afternoon at Mason Field. Faceoff is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
