MEMPHIS, Tenn. (February 25, 2022) – The Rhodes Lynx ran their win-streak up to three games with a pair of victories on Friday at Stauffer Field. In the morning affair, Rhodes defeated University of Chicago 10-3, and followed that with an 8-2 win over Alma in the encore performance. The Lynx now sit at 5-3-1 on the season.
Game One
Rhodes 10, UChicago 3
The Lynx started the day off strong with a come from behind victory over the Chicago Maroons. Chicago jumped out to an early lead in the first, when Jackson Slipock scored on an RBI single from Blane Soper. They added two more to the lead in the third inning when a run scored on a wild pitch and another was driven in on a Carson Weekley single.
Rhodes was not phased by the early deficit, and battled back in the bottom of the fourth.
Wood Kimbrough led off with a single, and was sacrificed to second. He was brought in on a
Bryce Anderson double to right. After
Ben Wilson reached on an infield single to put men on the corners, Anderson scored when Wilson was thrown out at second trying to steal. With two outs, a walk and a hit by pitch put two men on for
Quinn Blackman. The rightfielder came through with a blooper to center to plate
Ben Burkhart and Malcolm Rohlfing.
Jeff Gibbs was phenomenal in relief, absolutely shutting down the Maroons. With the Lynx hanging on to their 4-3 lead, they blew the game open in the eighth. A total of twelve players made their way to the plate, and produced six runs on four hits and three errors.
Ben Wilson highlighted the inning with a two-run double to right, and was matched moments later by
Peter York whose double was shot down the right field line to score a pair.
York was flawless from the leadoff spot, reaching base five times in five plate appearances with two singles, a double, a walk and a hit by pitch. He scored once, drove in two, and stole two bases.
Bryce Anderson and
Ben Wilson also had multiple hits in the game for the Lynx.
Noah Roland started the game for Rhodes and had six strikeouts in 4.1 innings. The aforementioned Gibbs allowed only one hit in 3.2 innings with four strikeouts to earn the win.
Game Two
Rhodes 8, Alma 2
The Alma Scots took on the Rhodes for the second time in three days, and came away with the same result as the first matchup. The Lynx were able to get on the board early in the second inning thanks to a
Ben Wilson double to right that plated
Dante Messina. Moments later,
Peter York walked with the bases loaded to bring in Wilson and make it 2-0.
Jacob Dubs was sensational in his third start of the year for the Lynx. He tossed six innings of shutout baseball, allowing only one hit on the day with six strikeouts. He received an extra run of support in the bottom of the sixth from
Mitchell O'Berry, who clubbed a double to deep left center that scored
Corbin Kinder.
Five more runs were added to the Lynx ledger in the seventh inning, courtesy of four hits and an error.
John McNair had an RBI on a sac fly, Wilson added two more RBI to his total with a single,
Gunnar Vachris scored on an error, and
Sam Roffwarg earned an RBI with a base hit.
Alma added two runs in the eighth to make the 8-2 final score.
Next up for Rhodes is a rematch with Chicago on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm. Alma and Chicago wll play each other before that at 10:30am at Stauffer Field.
