MILLINGTON, Tenn. (February 23, 2022) - On a moist, frigid and gloomy afternoon at USA Stadium in Millington, the Rhodes Lynx (3-3-1) moved their season record to .500 with a convincing 8-1 win against Alma College (1-4).
After a quick 1-2-3 inning from Rhodes starter
Jaxon Cady, the Lynx went to work with the bat in the bottom half.
Peter York singled to lead off, and moved to second on a
Quinn Blackman base hit. A double play put two outs on the board, but also advanced York to third. Moments later,
Will Heurtin came through with a line drive to center to score York and give Rhodes a 1-0 lead.
The Scots got one back in the top of the second following a leadoff double and an RBI single from Nolan Chillcut. It seemed that the Lynx would answer back with authority after loading the bases with nobody out. However, Alma starter Blake Stone was able to get out of the jam with a groundout, strikeout, and pop out to the catcher.
Alma went down in order in the top of the third, and the Lynx piled it on in their portion of the inning. Heurtin singled, followed by a
Corbin Kinder walk to put two men on with two out.
Malcolm Rholfing drive in a run on a double to left center, followed by an RBI from
Ben Burkhart on a single. After a wild pitch put two men in scoring position, York delivered a base hit to center that scored both runners to make it 5-1.
After Cady set down the Scots in order in the fifth, the Lynx were back at it. Kinder walked to lead off, and scored on a double from
Julien Brown. Rholfing followed with a groundball to second that plated Brown. With two outs, York collected his third hit of the game, and proceeded to steal second. He was brought in moments later on a
Quinn Blackman single, making the final of 8-1.
Following the last out of the fifth, the umpires and head coaches decided to call the game due to weather. It was roughly 35 degrees and raining sleet at the time.
Cady was excellent in his outing, firing all five innings for the Lynx. He allowed two hits, one run and struck out seven. York was 3-4 with two runs, two RBI and a steal to lead the offense.
These teams will see each other plenty this weekend. The next slated game is on Friday, February 25 back at Stauffer Field. Rhodes will take on University of Chicago at 11am before seeing the Scots at 2pm.
