MEMPHIS, Tenn. (February 20, 2022) - A late inning comeback attempt ultimately came up short for Rhodes as they fell the Webster University Gorlocks 13-9 on Sunday at Stauffer Field. The loss moves Rhodes to 2-3-1 on the young season.
Webster got things started out of the gate with a home run in the first and three more runs in the second to take an early 4-0 lead. The Lynx got one back in the third when
Peter York connected on his first longball of the season. That led to a voracious response from the Gorloks, who added five in the fourth and two in the fifth to lead 11-1.
Rhodes did not stop fighting, however. In the bottom of the fifth,
Gunnar Vachris singled to lead off the inning, and was joined on the bases by
Mitchell O'Berry who was hit by a pitch. With two outs,
John McNair was also plunked to load the bases for
Wood Kimbrough. The senior came through with a double that drove in all three runners. HE was then brought in on a balk, making it a 11-5 ballgame.
After a scoreless sixth, the Lynx struck again in the seventh.
Quinn Blackman and York reached safely on a walk and single, respectively, to get things started. After a passed ball moved both runners up, McNair carded an RBI on a groundout.
Will Heurtin then laced a double to right two batters later to bring in York.
Ben Wilson got in on the extra-base action with a triple that plated Heurtin. Wilson would then scored on a wild pitch, making it 11-9. Webster added a pair in the eighth, and Rhodes failed to get on base in the final two frames, creating a final of 13-9.
York was 2-4 with two runs and a walk to lead the offense. Heurtin also had two hits and drove in one. Kimbrough had three RBI on the day.
Rhodes will play host again this upcoming week as they welcome Alma College and the University of Chicago to Memphis. The three teams will face each other multiple times, with the first matchup between Rhodes and Alma scheduled for Wednesday at 2:00 pm at Stauffer Field.
