Rhodes Drops Home Opener Versus Millikin

Millikin defeated Rhodes 9-5 on Sunday afternoon

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (February 13, 2022) - The Rhodes Lynx lost their first game at Stauffer Field this season, falling to the visiting Millkin Big Blue by a score of 9-5. The loss moves Rhodes to 1-2 on the year while Millikin now has an identical 1-2 record.

The Lynx got on the board early when the red-hot John McNair plated leadoff man Peter York, who had reached on a triple, with a sac fly. In the top of the third, Millikin put together a two-out rally. A single and a walk put two men on for Kyle Gibson, who drove both runners in with a double. The Lynx were able to tie the score at two apiece in the fourth when Wood Kimbrough scored on a sac fly.

The fifth inning proved to be the turning point in the game. Millikin singled to lead off the inning, and then sacrificed the runner to second. An error would bring the leadoff man home, making it 3-2. Another Rhodes error put men on the corners, setting the stage for Garrett Fritz. The cleanup hitter did his job, launching a three-run home run over the wall to expand the lead to 6-2. All the runs scores in the inning were unearned against the Rhodes pitchers.

Millikin added three more in the sixth on a pair of RBI singles to make the score 9-2. The Lynx did not give up, and tried to make it a game in the eighth. McNair homered with one out, and four batters later Chris Penna ws driven home on a Bryce Anderson single. Things got interesting in the ninth when the Lynx loaded the bases down 9-4. Penna walked, earning an RBI, which also brought the tying run to the plate. A groundout to third when end the drama, leaving the Lynx just shy of their second win of the year.

McNair reached base three times in this one, driving in two and scoring once. For the opening weekend, he was 7-10 at the plate with nine RBI. CJ Carron took the loss for Rhodes, despite an impressive eight strikeouts in only 4.2 innings of work.

Next up for the Lynx is a weekend full of baseball. A variety of out of state opponents will be playing both on campus and at the USA Baseball complex in Millington this weekend. For the complete schedule, please see the BASEBALL SCHEDULE page.
