MEMPHIS, Tenn. (February 18, 2022) - Rhodes finds themselves back in the win column following Friday afternoon's clash with the Fontbonne Griffins at Stauffer Field. With the 12-6 victory, Rhodes moves to 2-2 on the season while Fontbonne falls to 0-1.
After a clean first inning, Rhodes took advantage of sloppy defense from the Griffins in the second to establish a huge lead.
Wood Kimbrough led off reaching on a routine groundball that was misplayed by the second baseman.
Quinn Blackman then followed with a tailor-made double play grounder that was also misplayed, giving the Lynx new life. A hit by pitch would load the bases with one out, setting the stage for
Ben Wilson. The senior delivered with a gapper double to left-center, scoring a pair. Speedster
Ben Burkhart then followed with a single up the middle to plate another. From there, it went back to the top of the lineup where
Peter York then placed a line drive in the grass in right to score Wilson. Kimbrough and Blackman then each added singles of their own that drove in runs, making it 7-0 by the end of the inning. All seven runs in the inning were unearned against Fontbonne starter Nick Glaser.
The Griffins got one back in each of the fourth and fifth innings before the Lynx pounced again. With two outs and two on, York lifted a high fly ball to center that was misplayed, allowing both runs to score. After York stole second, Will Huertin ripped a base hit through the middle that plated York to make it a 10-2 game.
Fontbonne kept fighting, and scored three times in the seventh. Rhodes was able to respond when another Fontbonne error, their fifth of the game, allowed York to score. Kimbrough then followed with another hit, his third, that brought in
John McNair to make it 12-5. The Griffins added one more but could not come back all the way, and lost 12-6.
Jacob Dubs was strong in his start for Rhodes, going four innings. He scattered three hits, allowed one run, and struck out seven in the outing. On offense, Kimbrough led the way with his three hits, and York scored three times while also stealing two bags.
The Lynx will be back in action again on Saturday afternoon when they take on Piedmont. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm at Stauffer Field.
