DANVILLE, Ken. (January 30, 2022) - It wasn't pretty, but Rhodes was still able to find a way to win on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Centre Colonels by a score of 58-46. The win, which was the eighth in a row for the Lynx, moves Rhodes to 15-2 (7-0 SAA) on the season. Centre falls to 7-12 (4-5 SAA).
Taya Lee got things started with a bucket down low, but Centre was quick to respond. Every time the Lynx scored early on, it seemed the Colonels were ready to respond. Centre even took a lead at 9-8 off of a Piper Hensley three. The lead was shortlived as
Alli Mayeux connected on a triple of her own, followed by a three-point play from Lee to give Rhodes a 14-9 lead. Centre would add two baskets before the buzzer, leading to a 14-13 score after one.Â
The two teams fought tooth and nail in the second quarter, matching basket for basket. Mayeux had the hot hand for Rhodes, knocking down a second three and mid-range jumper to extend the Rhodes lead to 19-15. Centre again took a lead, but A'Niya Lagarde finished a three-point play to regain the momentum. Staying true to the game script, Centre was able to tie things up shortly thereafter. Near the end of the half,
Libby Long connected from long distance, and Lee added another bunny to create the halftime score of 29-26.
Rhodes took the bal to the block to start things off in the second half.
Taya Lee earned free throws on Rhodes' first possession, followed by three consecutive makes in the paint from Lagarde to make it 36-28. The Lynx then changed pace, with Long,
Ellen Hagen, and Mayeux all connecting on three-pointers to blow the game open. Lagarde would add four points in a row at the end of the quarter, giving Rhodes a comfortable 51-38 cushion.Â
Centre opened up the final frame with five straight points to ut the lead to single digits. Mayeux answered with a mid-range jumper, and then a free throw in the next possession to push the score to 54-43. From there, things went cold for both teams. From 6:36 to 2:04 on the game clock, zero points were scored.
Catherine Althoff snapped that streak with a pair of free throws, and the Lynx just ran out the clock from there. At the final whistle, the score was 58-46.
Rhodes received gritty efforts from Lagarde, Mayeux, Hagen, and Long who all played more than 37 minutes. Lagarde led the team in scoring with 17 points to go with seven rebounds, while Maeux carded yet another double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Presley Chirico was the only player to reach double digit scoring (10) for the Colonels.Â
Rhodes next action will come on the road on Friday, February 4 at Berry. That will be followed with a game at Oglethrope on the 6th.Â
