MOUNT BERRY, Ga. (February 4, 2022) - Rhodes continued their domination of the Southern Athletic Association on Friday evening, taking down the second-place Berry Vikings by a score of 60-48. For the Lynx, it is their ninth straight win, and it also kep them undefeated in SAA play (8-0). Rhodes now sits at 16-2 on the season while Berry falls to 12-7.
Coming into the game, Berry had the number one ranked defense in the conference, limiting opponents to 49.6 points per game. While they did succeed in keeping Rhodes under their season average of 75.8, they did not have nearly enough offense to compete with the Lynx.
After
Ellen Hagen nailed a three to start the scoring, but Berry soon jumped out to a 5-3 lead. The score would then tie at 5-5, 7-7, and 10-10 as the two teams battled it out. With under 90 seconds to go in the first quarter, Rhodes was able to get three straight layups from Hagen and
Taya Lee to take a 16-10 lead into the second.
The second quarter was an ugly one for both teams as they struggled to make shots drop. Neither team was able to score until
Libby Long connected on a triple two minutes into the quarter. It was then almost five minutes of game time until the next bucket was made, again another three from Long. Berry was able to put together a ew successful attempts on offense, but a late
Catherine Althoff basket gave Rhodes a 24-18 lead heading into halftime.
Kennedy Moore got to the rim for the first basket of the second half, pulling Berry within four points. Unfortunately, the ship began to sink for the Vikings from that point on. The Lynx ripped off sixteen points in a row, including six from A'Niya Lagarde and four from Hagen. The senior point guard then added two more free throws right before the end of the quarter to make it a 42-24 game.
The Lynx stayed hot to start the fourth with Lee and Althoff connecting on back-to-back possessions to extend the game to 46-24. Berry woke up offensively, and ended up scoring as many points in the fourth quarter (24) as they did in the previous three quarters combined. With a comfortable lead, Rhodes was able to take their time on offense and get good looks in the paint. They also added seven of ten free throws in the final minute to take home the 60-48 win.
Hagen ran the show for the Lynx tonight, finishing with a team-high 15 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Lagarde recorded yet another double-double, finishing with eleven points and fifteen rebounds.
Libby Long connected on three triples and added eleven points for the Lynx.
Next up is a road match at Oglethorpe on Sunday, February 6. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00pm EST/12:00 pm CST.
