Road Win Makes it Seven Straight for Lynx

Rhodes defeated Sewanee 72-58 on Friday evening

SEWANEE, Tenn. (January 28, 2022) - The Rhodes women's basketball team captured their seventh straight win, and remained undefeated in SAA conference play in the process, with a 72-58 win at Sewanee on Friday night. The victory moves Rhodes to 14-2 (7-0 SAA) on the year, while Sewanee drops to 6-12 (1-7 SAA).

These two teams met last weekend in Memphis, and played to a similar result. Rhodes jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter with red-hot shooting. The Lynx were 8-10 from the field, 4-4 from three-point range, and 4-4 from the line to stake an early 24-9 lead. All five starters scored multiple points to set the tone early for Rhodes.

Sewanee did not give up, coming out in the second quarter with a 11-4 run, pulling within single digits. A three-point play from Alli Mayeux stymied the run momentarily, The Tigers were able to rally once more thanks to buckets from Ashley Stewart and Kayla Antoine, but Rhodes was able to counter with their bread and butter offense ... working the ball down low. Late in the half, A'Niya Lagarde, Taya Lee, and Catherine Althoff were all able to score in the paint to grow the lead back to double digits before heading to halftime up 43-29.

Neither team was especially effective in the third quarter, with both squads shooting below 35%. Althoff was able to put the Lynx on her back and score eight in the period to maintain a healthy lead. In the fourth quarter, Mayeux scored the first five points on a three and some free throws. From there, it was similar to every other Rhodes win during the streak ... play solid defense, work the ball down low, and hit free throws. By the end of the fourth, Rhodes had a 72-58 win in the bag.

Althoff led the Lynx in scoring for the fourth consecutive game, finishing with 24 points and seven boards. Her teammates Mayeux and Lagarde each carded double-doubles in the match to help out. Mayeux went for 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Lagarde finished with 15 points and 12 boards. The Rhodes defense limited Sewanee to 34% shooting on the night.

Rhodes wil continue their weekend road trip with a game at Centre on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
