Briant and Chandler Headline Last Week's Track & Field Performances

5/17/2021 9:50:00 AM

Memphis - Rhodes College track & field sent three individuals to the Johns Hopkins Charm City Invitational last Tuesday, trying to better their national ranking performances in two different events.

Sam Withers placed third in the 800m in a time of 2:17.05, less than one second off her personal record from this season. Mary Nusloch and Ben Hazelwood both ran the 5k with Nusloch placing fourth (18:32.98) and Hazelwood ninth (15:22.66). In just the second time running the event, Nusloch finished with a 10-second personal record from her performance in March at the Rhodes Invitational.

With just two Last Chance meets left in the season to try and qualify for the 2021 NCAA Division III Championships, the trio then turned around and headed to Naperville, Ill. for North Central College's Dr. Keeler Invitational, which took place that Thursday and Friday. Meeting them there were fellow Lynx Fernando Serrano Alvarado, Brendan Fusco, Jared Briant and Maddie Chandler

Serrano and Fusco were the lone performers Thursday. Serrano placed seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 43 meters while Fusco placed 14th in the 5k in 16:36.43. Withers placed 15th in the steeplechase while Hazelwood set a new PR in the 1500m with a 10th place finish in 4:04.23 and Nusloch placed eighth in the same event in 4:50.03. Meet highlights included a first place finish from Maddie Chandler in the long jump with a mark of 5.72m (18' 9.25"), breaking her indoor record which qualified her for the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships, which were ultimately canceled due to COVID. Her jump last week is currently ranked 11th in D-III. On the men's side, Briant shattered Rhodes' steeplechase record in 9:16.33. The old mark stood for 23 years at 9:31. Briant is currently ranked 13th in D-III.

The final Last Chance meet of the season is this Wednesday and Thursday as North Central hosts the Gregory Invitational. Only top-24 individuals will be accepted into the meet, which for the Lynx would be Briant (steeplechase), Chandler (long jump, triple jump) and Rachel Sullivan (high jump), who, if traveling would perform on Thursday.

The top-17 men and top-19 women in each event will qualify for the 2021 NCAA Division III Championships.
