MEMPHIS- It's a Senior Day sweep for Rhodes baseball! After escaping the Majors 7-5 in game one and following up with a 12-2 walk-off win in game two, the Lynx (18-12) finish the series 3-1 over Millsaps (10-24).
GAME 1
Rhodes got on the board early when junior
Wood Kimbrough hit a homer to right-center bringing in
Peter York and a 2-0 lead for the Lynx.
The Majors responded in the top of the second when senior catcher Will Neely singled to right field giving enough time for Millsaps to run one home.
With no action on the board in the third, Millsaps' nine hole came up huge in the top of the fourth. With a 2-2 count, one out, and bases loaded, Millsaps' Chris Hart doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and take a 4-2 lead. Millsaps ended the top on the fourth with a 5-2 lead after running in one more on a throwing error. With zero outs, junior
Ben Wilson snuck a shot through the four hole to bring a Lynx home. Next bat up,
Mitchell O'Berry executed a hit and run to perfection, bringing in two batters to tie the game 5-5. The Lynx regained the lead when a sac fly by York brought O'Berry home from third.
In the top of the fifth, sophomore
Brett Bokelman struck out the side in his first inning of relief and added two more K's in just as many innings. The Lynx rounded out the fifth with their final run of the game when
Bryce Anderson singled through the left side bringing Kimbrough in with a 7-5 finish.
GAME 2
After getting walked as leadoff batter,
Paul Giacomazzi advanced to second on a wild pitch before stealing third. Rhodes' first run of the game came when junior
Chris Penna hit a sac fly out to center field bringing Giacomazzi home.
In the bottom of the second,
John McNair hit his first home run of the season over the fence just out of reach of the Major's right fielder for the 2-0 margin.
The third inning belonged to Rhodes. Penna's singled through the right side scoring Giacomazzi from second and tallying Penna's second RBI of the game. Kimbrough followed up with a double to left center giving York space to run it home to a 4-0 advantage. Rhodes' first out of the inning was well played, bringing Penna across the plate on McNair's sac fly for the 5-nil gap. The Lynx continued to pull away when an error at second base gave Kimbrough the time needed to run it back home. Rhodes' next out would bring in another runner on a sac fly for an unanswered seven-point lead. The Lynx would finish with six runs in the inning after a single by
Colby Slaughter to third base brought Wilson back in to round out the bottom.
The fourth inning proved to be just as difficult for the Majors with three consecutive outs to make it a quick half. The Lynx kept the momentum and high energy going when York sent his second homer of the weekend to right field. Rhodes recorded one more run in the inning when a ground ball by McNair gave Penna ample time to make it back in the dugout.
The Majors joined the board in the top of the seventh when first year Jack Petkovsek tripled to right field to bring one home. Still running off the excitement, Millsaps notched another run two batters later when Dickinson flied out to center field bringing Petkovsek across the dish. The sudden rally was short lived as the Majors struck out swinging on their final out. The Lynx answered back with two runs of their own when junior infielder
Sam Roffwarg singled to right field scoring
Josh Esclamado and
Noah Dickerson for the walk-off win.
