Danville, Ky. - After winning game one on Saturday, Rhodes College baseball fell to Centre to open Sunday 11-4 before rebounding for the 5-3 victory to take the series.
Game 1
Rhodes rattled off three hits in the first inning and scored three runs to take the early lead before turning a double play in the bottom of the inning. Centre's offense recorded seven unearned runs in the second inning on six hits, a throwing error, and catcher's interference. They added another a lone run in each of the next three innings to lead 10-3. Rhodes'
Peter York led off the sixth with a triple and scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. The Colonels managed to cross one more run in the sixth. York and
Paul Giacomazzi each went 2-for-3.Â
Game 2
After Centre totaled 11 hits in the first game, Rhodes tallied 11 of their own to earn the victory in game two. Rhodes crossed an unearned run in the first on a sac fly by
Wood Kimbrough beofre Centre tied the game in the second on a two-out single up the middle which scored the Colonel from second base. With two outs in the third,
Chris Penna singled before Kimbrough doubled. A York walk loaded the bases for
Bryce Anderson who hit a two-RBI single up the middle to give Rhodes a 3-1 lead. Rhodes held Centre scoreless in the third despite committing two throwing errors.
Jaxon Cady struck out three Colonels in the fourth as Centre stranded two runners. After a scoreless fifth and sixth, the Lynx led off the seven with a walk. With two outs, Anderson singled in Penna down the left field line and then scored on a Sam Roffward double down the right field line to give Rhodes the 5-1 advantage. Centre crossed two runs in the seventh to finish the scoring. Rhodes ended the game converting a double play.
Cady struck out eight in six innings, allowing just one run and one walk.
John Fears threw 2.1 innings and picked up the save allowing just one hit and zero runs. At the plate, Anderson went 3-for-4 and tallied three RBI and scored a run. Kimbrough was the only other Lynx to earn multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4.Â
Rhodes, 11-8 in conference play and third in the SAA standings, will host Millsaps College this weekend with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. The Majors are 8-14 against conference opponents and are sixth in the standings.
*Rhodes, who had three total triples in their first 19 games, have now tripled in six of their last seven games.Â
