Lynx Earn Big Win At Centre

Danville, Ky. - With games originally scheduled for 12 and 3 p.m. Eastern, Rhodes College baseball weathered the storms and constant schedule changes for one game with a first pitch around 6:30 p.m.

Centre stranded a runner on third in the bottom of the first before the Lynx took advantage of a Colonel throwing error with two outs to score their first run during the second inning. Wood Kimbrough led off the inning with a single and made his way to  second on a Peter York groundout. He came all the way home on the error. Dante Messina later scored when Mitchell O'Berry singled to right field for the Lynx 2-0 advantage.

The Lynx crossed home again in the fifth with Paul Giacomazzi led off the inning with a home run. In the bottom of the seventh, Centre loaded the bases. John Fears entered into the game in relief for the Lynx. Fears got the Lynx out of the one-out, bases-loaded jam with two strikeouts and a walk as Rhodes now led 3-1.

The Colonels threatened in the bottom of the ninth trying for the walkoff. Fears struck out the leadoff pinch hitter before Alex Garrett went to the mound for Rhodes. The Colonels doubled on a short pop fly behind second base with a close play at second. Centre loaded the bases and walked in a run to pull within one. With the bases still loaded, Rhodes came away with the win on a fielder's choice to the shortstop, getting the soft toss at second base for the third out.

Nick Ferazzi got the start and win for Rhodes. He went 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts, allowing just one run and one walk. Fears struck out five in two innings without allowing a hit or run.

At the plate, Kimbrough went 4-for-4, the only Lynx with more than one hit. Giacomazzi was the only Lynx with a multi-base hit.

Rhodes and Centre will square off for two games on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m. ET. The two squads are vying for a spot in top four of the SAA standings to advance to this year's conference tournament. Rhodes is now 10-7 in conference and have won eight of their last 10 games while Centre is 8-9 against SAA opponents.
