Lynx Drop Two in Tough Weekend at Oglethorpe

ATLANTA - It was a tough weekend for the Lynx (1-11) as they went 0-2 against Oglethorpe (8-3) over the weekend.  

MBB v Oglethorpe Game 1

1st Half 

  • Oglethorpe started the shooting early with two threes less than a minute into the game. 
  • After eight unanswered points, Jalen Essick opened the scoring for the Lynx after a turnover committed by Oglethorpe's Lane Foster. 
  • Mac James recorded the first steal of the night 20 seconds later resulting in another good layup for Essick. 
  • Kevin Shen sunk the Lynx first three-pointer to close the gap to a three points.
  • The Lynx saw their first lead after Shen recovered an offensive board and handed it over to freshman Jeremiah Cook who followed with his own successful three-point attempt. 
  • The Lynx continued to pull away after a three by Koki Wiley followed by Shen's fast break in the paint giving the Lynx their largest lead of the game at six points. 
  • Oglethorpe inched their way back in front after a combination of three's and jumpers to make it a two-point game. 
  • Rhodes quickly answered back with a three-pointer by first year Hayden Lamey to toggle the score between the two teams. 
  • Once answered with a layup in the paint by Lane, the Petrels held steady with the lead.  
  • Oglethorpe came within a point of losing their advantage when Shen notched his third three-pointer of the half, but kept the lead finishing the half with a 48-41 advantage.

2nd Half 

  • Mac James set the tone early in the second half by capitalizing on a turnover by Oglethorpe with a jumper in the paint. James was heavy on both sides of the ball, retrieving a missed three-pointer by the Petrels seconds later. Wiley followed up and finished the possession with a three to make it a three-point game 49-46. 
  • The Lynx committed their first foul of the half when Lane went up for a bucket, giving the Petrels the opportunity at a six-point lead. 
  • Wiley and James brought the energy back with buckets of their own to bring the Lynx within two. 
  • James later secured the Lynx their first lead of the second half with back-to-back three-point shots making it 56-55 with 12:54 left in the game. 
  • The Petrels answered with another layup in the paint, ultimately starting their final nine-point advantage. 
  • James went on to record 20 points on the night, followed by Shen with 14, with Essick and Wiley both tallying 10 points and seven rebounds. 
  • In a three-pointer heavy game, the Lynx shot over 53% from the arc in the first half compared to Oglethorpe's 35% and over 30% in the second half to the Petrels' 0%.  
  • The Lynx garnered 14 points off turnovers and 31 points from the bench with 11 Lynx getting playing time. 

MBB v Oglethorpe Game 2 

1st Half 

  • Koki Wiley picked up where he left off by opening the scoring with a layup in the paint. 
  • The Lynx came out heavy in the paint early on with first year TJ Clayton also putting up a layup to keep Rhodes' advantage going. 
  • Oglethorpe closed the gap to make it a tie game after two three's by Ryan Jenei 
  • Oglethorpe's Carlos gave the Petrels their first lead of the game when he put up a bucket in the paint. 
  • Kevin Shen answered quickly with a fastbreak layup to tie the board once again triggering the Petrels to take a timeout. 
  • Oglethorpe's Foster Lane did not slow up from game one and made his presence known once again. His layup straight out of the timeout gave the Petrels a two-point lead that was ultimately kept through the first half. 
  • Jefferson Walker went on to lead the Lynx offensively and tally seven more points on the half, as Rhodes closed out the first half with a six-point deficit of 34-28. 

2nd Half 

  • The Lynx took charge once again with Jalen Essick opening the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer. 
  • After getting fouled, the Petrels inched the advantage a little wider making it a five-point game. 
  • That didn't last long as Arnes Georgetown ll made a layup in the paint, making it a three-point game once more. 
  • Feeling the heat, Oglethorpe pulled away with two three pointers to sit the score 42-33. 
  • The Lynx didn't slow up as Walker recorded his first steal of the game resulting in James putting up a three. 
  • Regrouping during a called timeout, the Petrels came out hot with back-to-back three-point shots by Jenei making it a 13-point game (50-37). 
  • After stealing from Oglethorpe's Foster, Wiley put up a bucket and got the and-1 resulting in a now seven-point deficit for Rhodes. Wiley continued to close the gap with a fastbreak in the paint when Shen secured the next rebound.
  • Shen, being fouled by Oglethorpe's Jenei sank two free throws bringing the Lynx within three.  
  • Lane, doing what he had all weekend, sank a three to get the momentum rolling once again for the Stormy Petrels 
  • Georgetown worked hard in the paint netting back-to-back layups putting the Lynx within two points (53-51), the closest they had been since the first minute of the second half. 
  • The Petrels answered back with consecutive layups of their own by Ezigbo followed by another Jenei three-point shot. 
  • After subsequent fouls by Oglethorpe, the Lynx came within six points before the Petrels rallied away again. 
  • In the final seconds of the game the Lynx made a final push coming within a three-point deficit with a layup by Georgetown before falling 78-72. 
  • Four Lynx saw double digits – Wiley led the way with 19 followed by Georgetown (14), James( (11), and Walker (10). 
  • The Lynx shot 79.2% from the free throw line compared to the Petrels' 76.2%
