Men's Basketball Closes Out Season With Split At Sewanee

Sewanee, Tenn. -  Rhodes College men's basketball picked up two games at the University of the South after the 2021 conference season ending. The Lynx defeated the Tigers 80-68 on Saturday for their second win of the year before dropping a close game on Sunday 66-63. Sewanee moves to 1-4 on the season.

The Lynx started the same five players for both games, recorded relatively the same number of fouls, turnovers and  exactly the same number of rebounds, but shot 44 percent in the field on Saturday compared to 33.8 percent on Sunday. 

Saturday
Sewanee led 23-20 midway through the first half until Rhodes closed out the final nine minutes on a 20-4 run to lead 40-27 at the break. Koki Wiley and Mac James combined for 15 of those 20 points. Sewanee's four points came on a three-pointer and a free throw. During that half, the Lynx converted 11 Tiger turnovers into 13 points while committing just three turnovers themselves.

In the second half the Lynx went up by 17, but the Tigers cut that to five after 10 minutes of play. Rhodes led by nine with 2:56 to play as the Tigers were forced to foul, sending the Lynx to the free throw line. The final five points from Rhodes came from the charity stripe. 

During the game, Wiley went 9-of-16 for a career-high 26 points which included going 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Also recording double digits was James (13), Arness Georgetown II (11) and Jefferson Walker (10). First year TJ Clayton had a career day leading the game with 11 rebounds. Georgetown narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Walker totaled five steals while Clayton added another three.

Sunday
A back and forth game to start, the game was tied at 21 points each before a Sewanee 9-2 run put the Tigers ahead by seven and eventually 12 with 3:29 to go in the first half. By halftime, Sewanee led 42-32 after they shot 50 percent from the floor and made 11 free throws. Rhodes struggled going just 8-of-33 in the first half (.242).

Rhodes cut Sewanee's lead down to one with 12:56 to play, but the Tigers went on a 12-2 run to take a 64-53 lead with 5:23 to go. Rhodes scored 10 unanswered points to pull within one with 30 seconds remaining before the Tigers scored the final basket of the season with 20 seconds left. Rhodes missed a desperation three-pointer as time was about to expire. 

Georgetown tallied 20 points going 9-of-16 in the field while Wiley added 17 points and led the Lynx with seven rebounds. Clayton scored nine points and Kevin Shen recorded six rebounds. 

Rhodes concludes the abbrieviated season with a 2-12 overall record.
