Danville, Ky. - With both teams missing key players for Saturday's volleyball doubleheader, Centre College won a very contested game one in four sets before the Lynx swept the Colonels in game two. The win, the first of the season for the Lynx, also marked first year Lynx head coach
Peter Green's 100th career victory. Green had previously been the head coach at DII Chowan University for four years.
Game One
Rhodes trailed 10-8 before the Lynx scored five straight points to take the lead, which they maintained for the remainder of the set.
Annie Entz put the game away with a kill as Rhodes won 25-20. In the second set, a 10-3 run for the Colonels put them ahead 17-10, enough room for them to win the set. Rhodes led 23-22 in the third set when Centre closed it out on a 5-2 run (27-25). Centre opened the final set with seven straight points. Rhodes trailed 20-11 when the Lynx tried to force a fifth set. They scored seven in a row themselves before eventually tying the game 24-24. Centre tallied the next two points to win their first match of the season.Â
First year
Shayla Garrison recorded a career-high 17 kills while
Marissa Hall totaled 31 digs and Gabriele Kozick tallied 23 assists.
Game Two
Rhodes opened game two with seven unanswered points to hold on for the 25-17 first set victory. Second set leads went back and forth until Rhodes secured three points in a row for a 16-14 advantage. The Lynx were leading 23-21 when they went ahead 2-0 on back-to-back kills. In the third set, Centre led 19-16 until Rhodes came back to take a 24-22 advantage. A Lynx service error sparked a three-point run for the Colonels until Rhodes secured the three-set sweep on back-to-back kills and a block.
Rhodes tallied a 42-29 kill advantage in the win as
Annie Entz and Garrison recorded 10 kills each. Hall totaled 28 digs while
Brenna Weyant served up three aces and 27 assists.
The Lynx will hit the road again next weekend for a doubleheader at Oglethorpe on Saturday, March 13. Rhodes is now 1-3 on the season.
