Lynx Split the Weekend with Oglethorpe

ATLANTA - The Lynx (2-4) split the day with a 1-1 record falling in straight sets in game one followed by a 3-2 win over Oglethorpe (3-3) after the break.

Game 1

Oglethorpe opened the game with a kill to set the tone before soon scoring seven unanswered points. Rhodes' Rachel Sullivan snapped the Petrels' streak with a kill of her own before a Lynx service error ended the scoring run. The Petrels took the first set 24-13 after multiple unanswered runs.

Oglethorpe kept the same opening energy by starting the second set off with a kill. The Lynx began to find their groove going point-for-point on the first three plays. A bad set sent the Petrels on a four-point run to make it an 8-3 game. A service error by Oglethorpe led to Rhodes' back-to back points making the score 8-5, the closest the Lynx would get the remainder of the set. The Lynx struggled to close the gap ultimately dropping the second set 25-14.

Oglethorpe opened the final set with three consecutive kills by Emilee Etter. The Petrels' kill streak was paused by a service error putting the Lynx on the board. Oglethorpe's offense recorded six back-to-back kills by four different Petrels before ending the streak on another error. After being down 9-2 early on, the Lynx would go on to close the gap to a four-point game at 12-8 before falling 25-15.

First year Shayla Garrison recorded 31 attacks and eight kills followed by Rachel Sullivan's 24 attacks and nine kills through all three sets. Reigning SAA Player of the Week Marissa Hall led the Lynx defensively with 12 digs.

Game 2

It was Rhodes' turn to open scoring as sophomore Rachel Sullivan set the tone of the game with a kill. Oglethorpe quickly answered, but the Lynx came out of the break fired up as senior Kelsey Glasper responded with another kill. An attack error by Oglethorpe led to the first block of the game by Kathryn Chambers and Kelsey Glasper keeping Rhodes' lead. The Petrels gained the advantage when they went on a 5-0 run to lead 13-11 ultimately keeping that small margin to win 25-22.

The Lynx again opened the second set with a kill this time by Glasper before Oglethorpe retaliated with two kills of their own. Rhodes' next two kills put them back in the lead which was cut short after the Petrels earned consecutive points on a service error followed by a kill. Rhodes went ahead 11-5 on four Oglethorpe attack errors and two Lynx kills before the Stormy Petrels closed the gap to a one-point game after scoring five unanswered points. The Petrels would go on another unanswered run to tie the score 15-15, but never saw the lead as the Lynx won 25-20.

Rhodes opened the third set with a kill by Garrison. More evenly matched this set, teams exchanged points relatively evenly throughout the set. A service ace by Kelsey Glasper tied the nail biter 24-24 before Oglethorpe took the final two points wining the third set 26-24.

A kill by Garrison was too much to handle for Oglethorpe's Rosenthal giving the Lynx the first point of the fourth set. Garrison was on fire securing the following point on an attack to give the Lynx an early two-point lead. Back-to-back kills widened the gap as the Lynx maintained the advantage throughout the entire fourth set. Garrison and Chambers recorded four kills each followed by Kozik and Sullivan's three a piece to take the fourth set 25-21, ultimately forcing a fifth set.

Oglethorpe opened the scoring for the final set, but back-to-back kills by Sullivan set the tone for the finale. A kill by Oglethorpe's Rosenthal would go on to even the score 5-5, but that would be the closest the Petrels would get before falling 15-11 to end the match on a 3-2 win for the Lynx.

Shayla Garrison led on both sides of the ball with 22 kills and 25 digs, three Lynx recorded single aces, and Gabriele Kozik lead in assists with 29.

The Lynx are back in action Saturday March 20th in their first home matches of the season against 4-0 Berry.
