Volleyball Drops Weekend Matches Against No. 9 Berry

Memphis - In their home opener, the Rhodes College volleyball team fell in straight sets twice to No. 9- ranked Berry College Saturday. The Lynx, who are now 2-6 on the year, scored 20 or more points in four of the six sets. 

Game 1 (21-25, 20-25, 24-26)
Rhodes trailed by one (6-5) in the opening set before the Vikings scored six straight points to open the game. The Lynx pulled within three (18-15) but wouldn't get any closer. In the second set Berry held a 10-3 advantage before going up by nine (17-8). The Lynx inched their way back to a three-point deficit (20-17) before Berry clinched the second set. The third set saw seven ties. Tied 12-12, Berry pulled ahead 23-19 before Rhodes tied the set with four unanswered points which included two kills. The squads each tallied a kill before a Berry block followed by a kill, closed out the match. 

Gabrielle White hit .462 at the net with eight kills on 13 attempts for the Lynx while Shayla Garrison also recorded eight kills. Brenna Weyant totaled 15 assists followed closely by Gabriele Kozik's 13 assists. 

Game 2 (16-25, 18-25, 23-25)
Game two started off tied 6-6 before Berry went on a 9-3 run to break open the set. Rhodes trailed by one (10-9) before another Viking run opened up the second set 19-11. The Lynx tried to come back and pulled within four (20-16), but the Vikings held on to go up 2-0. In the final set of the day, The Lynx trailed 12-7 before an 11-2 run gave Rhodes an 18-14 lead. Rhodes reached 20 points first and led 23-20 before a Berry timeout re-grouped the Vikings. Rhodes called a timeout up by one (23-22), but Berry closed out the sweep with three straight kills. 

White again led the Lynx with seven kills while Marissa Hall totaled four aces. The Lynx also tallied 10 block assists. 

Rhodes will hit the road for a doubleheader in Jackson, Miss. against Millsaps on Saturday, March 27th starting at 11 a.m.
