Memphis - It was a gorgeous Monday in Memphis for some Rhodes baseball! The Lynx defeated Oglethorpe 7-2 in the seven inning contest to start the day, picking up their fourth straight victory. The Stormy Petrels earned the heated 7-4 victory in game two. Rhodes is now 10-9 on the season and 6-6 in SAA play. Oglethorpe is 10-17 overall and 6-10 in conference.
Game One
Jacob Dubs got the start and secured the three outs of the first inning, all on strikeouts. He would go 3.1 innings and struck out six Stormy Petrels. A leadoff double in the third eventually allowed Oglethorpe to take a 2-0 lead before the Lynx took advantage of an Oglethorpe fielding error and scored a run. A
Will Heurtin sac fly tied the game in the fifth before
John McNair singled in
Paul Giacomazzi for the winning run. Three singles and a flyout in the sixth plated another run for Rhodes before Giacomazzi walked. Heurtin then recorded a two-RBI single to give Rhodes a 6-2 lead.
Chris Penna then reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop when Giacomazzi scored to end scoring for the game. Rhodes' Johhn Fears sat the Stormy Petrels down in order in the top of the seventh. He finished the game with the win after striking out four in 3.2 innings on the mound.
Eight Lynx tallied a hit including two from
Peter York. Heurtin finished with three RBI and Penna two. Only one Lynx struck out while Dubs and Fears combined for 10 strikeouts against the Petrels.
Game Two
Both teams were scoreless through three innings, even as Rhodes stranded three runners in the second inning. Oglethorpe got on the scoreboard in the fourth on a sac fly before the Lynx tied the game in the bottom half of the inning after taking advantage of two Oglethorpe errors. They left three runners on base once again. A failed pickoff attempt from the Lynx in the fifth allowed a run to score as the visitors ended up with a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, York hit a solo shot to right field to pull Rhodes within one.Â
Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh inning despite multiple errors where Rhodes left another three runners on base at the end of the seventh. In the eighth, Oglethorpe scored a run before things got heated when Rhodes earned an out at third base on a fielder's choice, which Oglethorpe argued. Two coaches from the Stormy Petrels were removed from the game.Â
Sam Roffwarg pinch hit a double to lead off the bottom of the eighth when
Mitchell O'Berry homered with zero outs to tie the game. Oglethorpe plated three runs in the top of the ninth on two hits and two Lynx errors.Â
York and McNair earned two hits.
Brett Bokelman got the start and struck out five in four innings of work.Â
Rhodes will travel to Hendrix this weekend for a four-game series against the Warriors.
