Baseball Hits Their Way Past Oglethorpe Twice

Memphis -  Rhodes baseball powered their way to two victories over Oglethorpe University Sunday afternoon after totaling 28 hits. The Lynx downed the Stormy Petrels 11-2 with 16 hits in game one before jumping out to a 10-1 lead in game two. Rhodes concluded the seven-inning game winning 14-4 and are now 9-8 on the season. The two squads will meet again Monday for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.

Game One
Oglethorpe scored the first two runs before Rhodes crossed three in the bottom of the same inning. The Lynx hit two home runs in the next inning, one from leadoff hitter Chris Penna, before Wood Kimbrough rattled another solo shot over the fence to put Rhodes up 5-2 after three innings. After two scoreless innings, John McNair was hit by a pitch, which allowed Paul Giacomazzi to score.

Rhodes pitchers sat Oglethorpe down in order in the seventh innings before the Lynx scored four more runs on five hits, a stolen base, and two sac flies. Three singles and a sac fly in the eighth scored the final run.

The Lynx played 21 individuals during the game with 11 earning a hit, seven scoring and six who tallied an RBI. Nick Ferrazi got the win after allowing just three hits and striking out eight Stormy Petrels in 6.2 innings of work.

Game Two
Oglethorpe again scored first, this time on a two-out double in the first before the Lynx exploded their first time at the plate with four runs on four hits, two walks and a sac fly. In the top of the second, Nathan Mirochnick, who earned the win, picked off a Stormy Petrel at first base before Penna hit his second home run of the day in the bottom half of the inning for two RBI. Leading 6-1, Rhodes added three more runs in the third on three hits, a walk, sac fly and hit by pitch.

Oglethorpe added two in the fourth before Rhodes immediately responded with another three runs, without earning a hit. The Lynx made their way around the bases as the Stormy Petrels struggled on the mound surrendering three walks (one intentional), two hit by pitches, a wild pitch, a sac fly, and a fielder's choice home where the runner at home and then the Lynx batter were both called safe. A lone run in the fifth gave Rhodes a 13-3 lead before the Petrels added the final run with two outs in the seventh.
