Jackson, Miss. - Rhodes College men's basketball came back from a 16-9 deficit to trail by two at halftime and then force overtime against the Millsaps Majors. The Majors came away with the 72-69 victory, with a final layup at the buzzer.
Millsaps led 16-9 in the low-scoring first half when Rhodes scored 10 straight points to take the lead with 3:22 remaining in the half. A three-pointer put the Majors up before
Koki Wiley sank two free throws to tie the game 21-21. The Majors connected on a jump shot with two seconds left for the two-point halftime advantage.
Second half play was back and forth with 16 ties and six lead changes. Millsaps led 61-59 with the shot clock running down as
Arness Georgetown II pulled up at the free throw line to tie the game with five seconds remaining in regulation. The Majors got off a last second three-pointer but again Georgetown came to the rescue with a block to force overtime.
Mac James connected on a trey to give Rhodes a 66-65 advantage with 1:51 to go. Millsaps went up 70-66 until
Kevin Shen sank a trey to pull within one with two seconds left. A fast break later and Millsaps finished the game with a dunk.
The Lynx were led by Georgetown with 18 points and eight rebounds alongside Essick with 17 points and nine rebounds. Georgetown went 8-for-15 while Essick went 6-for-12 in the field. James went 3-for-6 from the arc and Wiley tallied four assists and three steals.
Rhodes is on tap to take on the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels this weekend. Game one is slated for 6 p.m. Saturday followed by a 2 p.m. tipoff Sunday.
