Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball returned to winning action this past weekend with two victories over the Berry College Vikings. In a close contest Friday night, the Lynx edged Berry in the final minute (64-62) before rolling over the Vikings Saturday afternoon 74-59.
Game 1
After a close first quarter the Lynx went ahead by 12 with over six minutes left in the first half before Berry closed the gap. Rhodes led by two at halftime (39-37) after going 11-of-14 in the field in the second quarter. Six of those baskets were from
Kiera Downey who tallied 13 points in that period. She had 19 points at the half while
Alexys Mathangani recorded 11 points. A back and forth third period gave Rhodes a five-point advantage headed into the final frame despite the Lynx going 5-of-15 in the field.
Berry took a brief lead in the fourth period (58-57) before Rhodes went ahead 62-60. The Vikings hit a free throw to pull within one with three minutes left and tied the game on another free throw with 55 seconds left. Downey secured the winning jumper with 26 seconds left while Mathangani posted a block on the Vikings with three seconds left to secure the Lynx victory.
Downey totaled 22 points and five assists while Mathangani recorded 20 points, six rebounds and three blocks.
Alli Mayeux led the Lynx with eight rebounds including seven defensive boards.
Game 2
Prior to Saturday's contest, the Lynx honored outgoing seniors
Maya Longacre and
Caroline Taylor in case events prevented the Lynx from playing their final home games of the season at the end of February.
Rhodes jumped out to a 5-0 lead before holding a two-point edge after the first 10 minutes (17-15). The Lynx opened the second period with seven straight points on their way to a 13-2 run to lead 30-17. Rhodes held a double-digit lead for most of the remainder of the game, going up by as many as 28 points in the fourth period.Â
Mathangani led the Lynx with 17 points and six rebounds while Downey added another 15 points to her season totals. Recording three steals each were Downey and
Ellen Hagen.
Maya Longacre brought down a team-high eight rebounds while
Taya Lee added another seven.
The Lynx hit the road next weekend to Jackson, Miss. to take on the Majors. Game times have shifted due to a home football game for Millsaps. The women's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, however the men are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and per SAA requirements, the women should be allowed 60 minutes for warmups. The game on Sunday has also shifted to 2 p.m., allowing more rest between games.
