Jackson, Miss. - In a battle of two of the three top teams in the conference, Rhodes College women's basketball succumbed to No. 12-ranked Millsaps College 63-54 Saturday evening.
The Lynx held their largest lead of the game (seven points) midway through the first period after scoring nine straight points. The two teams would go back and forth most of the game with Millsaps holding a 26-25 halftime advantage. During that first half, the teams shot with relatively even accuracy while Millsaps held a 21-17 rebounding advantage.
Rhodes led 38-36 with four minutes left in the third period when Millsaps closed out the period on a seven-point run to lead 43-38. They opened the final frame with a layup to leady by seven. A three-pointer from
Ellen Hagen brought the Lynx back within three with 5:40 to play before
Alli Mayeux tied the game 52-52 on a layup inside the paint.
With Millsaps leading by two, the Lynx turned the ball over with 1:11 remaining and were forced to foul. Millsaps closed out the game on a 9-2 run, with seven points coming from the free throw line.
Mayeux led the Lynx with 15 points and eight rebounds. Hagen finished with 14 points connecting on 4-of-7 treys while also adding five rebounds.
Kiera Downey led the game with six assists.
Rhodes and Millsaps will not meet on Sunday, February 14 as originally scheduled. Due to travel concerns, the game has been postponed to a later date still to-be-determined. Rhodes has been scheduled with a bye week for the upcoming weekend.
