Conway, Ark. - A close first half gave way to a Rhodes women's basketball 29-point victory after the Lynx held a 24-12 third quarter advantage. Hot shooting from behind the arc propelled Rhodes to an 86-57 victory over Hendrix College Friday night.
Hendrix led briefly 4-2 until the Lynx posted a 17-4 run. The Warriors retaliated with a 9-2 run to end the first quarter with Rhodes leading 21-17.
Second quarter play continued to remain close with Rhodes recording a five point run and Hendrix a four point run. The Lynx, however, held a 24-18 edge as
Kiera Downey scored 14 points going 6-of-8 in the quarter. At halftime the Lynx led 45-35 and went 5-of-10 from the arc.
Rhodes opened the second half with their first of six three-pointers in the third quarter. Rhodes led 52-41 when they recorded five treys on their next six baskets from three different Lynx to lead 66-44. Rhodes went 6-of-11 from three-point range, 8-of-15 in the field, held a 12-6 rebounding advantage and 69-47 lead after three quarters.
The Lynx shot 43 percent in the fourth quarter as they increased their 24-point lead and held a 15-9 rebounding advantage. Thirteen of those were on the defensive end.
Maya Longacre and
Alexys Mathangani each recorded two blocks in the final 10 minutes of play.
Rhodes shot 48 percent in the second half compared to Hendrix's 18 percent and outrebounded the Warriors 27-15.
Downey led the game with 26 points going 10-of-17 in the field and 3-of-6 from from the arc. She also added three steals.
Alli Mayeux recorded 15 points (6-of-9) while
Catherine Althoff and
Libby Long each tallied 11 points.
Taya Lee led the game with nine defensive rebounds and
Ellen Hagen the all players with five assists. Mathangani also led the game with three blocks.
Rhodes and Hendrix will tip off at 7 p.m. Saturday.
