Memphis - Rhodes College football opened their spring 2021 season at home hosting Southern Athletic Association rival Birmingham-Southern College.
Rhodes won the toss and elected to receive the ball in their first game since November of 2019. The Panthers defense forced the Lynx to punt on their opening drive. Three plays was all it would take for BSC to score the winning touchdown as Robert Shufford converted a first and 10 to a 62-yard rushing touchdown.
BSC would go on to hold a 35-point lead at halftime. The Lynx defense held the Panthers to 17 points in the second half.
John Harris earned the lone sack for the Lynx in the first quarter sending BSC back eight yards.Â
Ethan Chamberlin picked up a team-long 25 yard reception which included 14 yards after the catch.
C.J. Laws totaled 87 return yards on seven kickoffs including one for 17 yards.
Franklin Garner averaged 42.3 yards on seven punts in the game, for a total of 296 yards.
Defensively, senior
Will Newman, made 11 solo tackles and led the Lynx with 14 total while
Joe Conroy tallied seven and
Evan Byrd recorded six.
Rhodes returns to action on Crain Field on Saturday, February 13 when they host Centre College in their final home game of their abbreviated five-game season.
