Birmingham, Ala. - Rhodes College women's volleyball dropped their doubleheader at Birmingham-Southern to open their spring 2021 season.
Game 1
The Lynx went up two sets to none (25-18, 25-20) before BSC's offense exploded to a 25-8 victory in the third set. The Panthers then closed out the comeback with 25-17 and 15-9 victories. In the fourth set, BSC jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Lynx cut that to three (15-12) midway through the set. The Panthers, however, went on a 5-1 run to lead 20-13 before ultimately forcing a fifth set. The Lynx jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but the hosts scored five straight points. The Lynx went up 9-8 but BSC earned the final seven points in a row to close out the match.
Rhodes was led by sophomore
Rachel Sullivan with 12 points and 12 digs while senior
Kelsey Glasper tallied 11 digs.
Game 2
Rhodes avoided the sweep in game two after winning the third set 25-21. In the first set, the Lynx trailed by only two points (20-18) when BSC earned the victory on a 5-1 run. With Rhodes ahead by one, BSC scored five straight and held onto the lead for the remainder of the second set. In the third set, the Lynx led 4-1. The match was tied 12-12 before the Panthers held a 16-13 advantage. A 4-1 Lynx run tied the game again 18-18 before BSC tallied two kills to reach 20 points. Two kills, a service ace, and a BSC attack error later, Rhodes led 22-20. The Lynx held on for the win with a 3-1 run which included kills from
Brenna Weyant and
Kathryn Chambers. In the fourth set, a seven-point run by BSC broke open the game 9-2. The Panthers led 10-5 when an eight-point run put the game away. Â
Libero
Marissa Hall led the game with 24 digs while Sullivan added another 19 along with her Lynx-high 13 kills. Weyant (15) and
Gabriele Kozik (11) led Rhodes in assists. Chambers recorded four block assists.
On the day, Rhodes recorded 11 service aces and about 13 blocks.
The Lynx are on the road this weekend taking on Centre College. First serve of a doubleheader is slated for 11am ET on Saturday, March 6.
