Lynx Comeback Halted In Final Seconds Against Oglethorpe

Atlanta, Ga. - Rhodes College women's basketball was clipped by Oglethorpe in the final seconds on the road Sunday afternoon. Oglethorpe secured the 71-70 victory in the final three seconds of the game as the Lynx fell to 4-2 on the year. The Stormy Petrels have now won 31 straight games.

In a close first half, Oglethorpe scored eight straight points nearing the end of the second period before holding a 34-27 halftime lead. The Lynx later scored 12 in a row to end the third period for a 48-46 lead after trailing by 11 points midway through the period. A'niya Lagarde's defensive efforts sparked Rhodes' scoring surge.

In the fourth quarter, Rhodes led by six with four minutes to go after a 16-10 run, of which, eight points came from Alli Mayeux who drained two treys. Oglethorpe closed the gap to one with 42 seconds left on an 8-3 run which included four free throws and six points from Savannah LeGate. The Lynx went to the free throw line with nine seconds left to try and increase thier lead, but missed both attempts. A defensive board and timeout allowed the Stormy Petrels to advance the ball past mid-court. Oglethorpe converted the winning layup with three seconds remaining to keep their win streak alive.

Kiera Downey led Rhodes with 20 points, six rebounds and four steals while Mayeux also hit double digits (14) and led the Lynx with seven rebounds. Ellen Hagen led the game, dishing out six assists while Alexys Mathangani tallied three blocks. 

LeGate led the game with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Oglethorpe held a 47-38 rebounding advantage in the win and brought down 13 offensive boards compared to Rhodes' seven. 

The Lynx will return to Mallory Gymnasium and host Berry College beginning Friday, February 5 at 6 p.m.
