Danville, Ky. - A back and forth game went into overtime as Rhodes College women's basketball fought to remain undefeated this season in their second matchup at Centre College. Despite the Colonels scoring first to open the extra period, the Lynx secured a 12-5 scoring advantage to secure their fourth straight win (81-74) of the season.
Rhodes led by six points early in the second period after an
A'niya Lagarde three-pointer before Centre closed the half on an 8-2 run to lead by one at halftime (31-30). Freshman
Catherine Althoff led Rhodes with seven rebounds, eight points, and two blocks in the first half before earning her second double-double of the season.
Centre scored first to open the second half, but sophomore
Libby Long tied the game 37-37 with a long three-pointer four minutes into the period. The Lynx took a brief lead, but seven straight points from Centre gave the Colonels a five-point advantage with 1:28 left in the period. Althoff made Rhodes' final two buckets before time expired to cut Centre's lead to three.Â
The Lynx opened the fourth period with five straight points including a three-pointer from
Alli Mayeux, her first of the game, to give Rhodes their first lead of the second half (50-48). The teams were tied 54-54 when Rhodes scored eight straight points with three minutes left in regulation. Centre kept fighting and scored six in a row to trail by two with 27 seconds remaining. The Colonels were forced to foul with 18 seconds left, allowing Mayeux to sink two free throws for the Lynx. Centre called another timeout to advance the ball and scored a layup running just six seconds off the clock. They were forced to foul the Lynx with 13 seconds left.
Ellen Hagen made one of her free throw attempts, but Centre pulled in a defensive rebound, called an immediate timeout, and then scored another layup to tie the game 69-69 with six seconds left in regulation.Â

Defensive efforts in overtime, including a block and defensive rebound from
Alexys Mathangani, as well as a steal from Hagen, helped the Lynx go on an 8-1 run to lead 78-70 with 2:05 to play. Rhodes settled in and ran down the clock in the final two minutes. Another Lynx block, this time from Longacre, kept Centre at bay until the Colonels scored a jumper to cut Rhodes' lead to 79-72. Centre continued their defensive efforts, but the Lynx secured their fourth straight win to start the season.Â
Mayeux led the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds with eight points coming in the fourth period alone before adding six more in overtime. She went 3-of-5 from long range and 5-of-10 in the field overall. Althoff finished the game with 16 points (7-of-13) and 12 rebounds, netting eight points in each half. Downey recorded 12 of her 14 total points in the fourth period. She finished the game with seven rebounds and three assists. Althoff and
Alexys Mathangani each tallied two blocks as Mathangani totaled 11 points. Long also hit double digits with 10 points.
Overall, Rhodes shot .418 percent in the field, .467 beyond the arc, and .600 at the free throw line. Rhodes committed 13 turnovers compared to Centre's five, but the Lynx totaled five blocks and held a 39-32 defensive rebounding advantage.
Rhodes will be on the road again next weekend. The Lynx are scheduled to play Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga. on Saturday and Sunday.
