1/30/2021 5:18:00 PM

Box Score Atlanta, Ga. - Rhodes College women's basketball took advantage of early Oglethorpe fouls, but a .214 shooting percentage in the fourth period, hurt the Lynx who suffered their first loss of the season. Rhodes fell to the Stormy Petrels 67-59 after Oglethorpe held a 23-12 fourth period advantage.

A block from Alli Mayeux, followed by a Kiera Downey three-pointer began a Rhodes 10-4 run as Downey scored each of the first seven points for the Lynx.

Mayeux again made another great 1-v-1 block later in the first half. Oglethorpe and the Lynx went back and forth with the lead for a while. Ellen Hagen gave Rhodes a 23-21 advantage with 6:21 left in the half, but back-to-back three-pointers followed by a steal and a fast break layup put Oglethorpe ahead by six with 1:27 to go. Hagan and Alexys Mathangani teamed up to end the Stormy Petrels' scoring streak with less than 25 seconds left when Hagan stole the ball and passed it up court to Mathangani for the fast break layup.

Caroline Taylor hit two free throws to begin scoring in the second half, pulling Rhodes within one (29-28) of the hosts. Mayeux got into foul trouble within the first two minutes of the second half, picking up her third foul of the game. Catherine Althoff tied the game with a turn-around jumper and a Taya Lee layup gave Rhodes a two-point edge for two possessions. Hagen served Mathangani a layup which she converted into a three-point play to give the Lynx a 38-35 lead with about three minutes left in the third period. Downey increased that lead to five, but a quick three-pointer on the other end and a free throw cut that to one with a minute left in the period. Rhodes scored five in a row before a three-pointer from Oglethorpe in the last seven seconds gave the Lynx a 47-44 advantage headed into the final frame.

Oglethorpe opened the fourth period with a three-pointer to tie the game. Althoff hit another trey to make it 50-47, scoring her 15th point of the day, but Oglethorpe scored eight unanswered points to take a 56-50 advantage. Downey tallied five points on a trey and two free throws to pull within one with 4:30 to play. A Stormy Petrel 7-0 run ended on a Mathangani three-pointer with 1:21 remaining as the Lynx trailed 65-59, their final bucket of the game.

Althoff led the game with 15 points as Downey tallied 14 points. The duo, along with Maya Longacre each roped in seven rebounds and Hagan led the game with four assists.

The Lynx held Savannah LeGate to seven points and three rebounds. She had picked up two fouls early, scoring only two points in the first half.

Each team recorded 52 rebounds but Rhodes committed 17 turnovers  compared to Oglethorpe's 10.
